Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Keith D Henry, MD, FAAEM (Regions Hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center)
Description: This comprehensive yet concise manual authored by seasoned emergency physicians and surgical specialists provides the step-by-step instructions required to perform basic, advanced, and life-saving procedures commonly used in emergent and urgent care settings.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a blueprint of a multitude of basic and advanced clinical procedures performed in clinical care settings from the primary care clinic to the emergency department. The emphasis is on universally accepted approaches that are time efficient, patient centered, safe, and evidence based. Supplements include access to an online version of the book and procedural videos. The authors clearly succeed in providing a unique procedure manual that is user friendly and readily applicable in any clinical environment.
Audience: All physicians and clinicians providing care in a setting that may require basic, advanced, and life-saving procedures are the intended audience.
Features: The content is organized into anatomic body systems and procedures are described using a bulleted format. Sections listing key points and required equipment preface all procedures to provide clinicians with a targeted synopsis of critical steps and necessary resources. Sections on aftercare and complications provide a unique and rapid review of postprocedural priorities and iatrogenic possibilities introduced in virtually all clinical procedures. Notes, axioms, and cautions appear throughout the book at important and critical steps, alerting clinicians to alternative approaches, procedural standards, and important safety hazards. The size and makeup of the manual makes it portable and easy to use in a chaotic emergency department or when on assignment in a resource-limited setting. The illustrations are somewhat limited, but the superior step-by-step instructions and videos make up for them.
Assessment: This is a high-yield, high-value procedure manual that can be used by both novice and expert clinicians. Its many unique features lend themselves to safe, efficient, patient-centered, and evidence-based care.
