Children's Literature - Elizabeth Fronk
This tale comes from a series that retells "familiar and favorite stories." Here it is Hansel and Gretel's story. It begins with the two children joining their mother and father in the woods. The boy and girl get lost but eventually find themselves near a little house. Based upon the illustrations, the children eat some of the house and anger the witch who lives there. The witch imprisons the boy but the little girl helps him escape and kills the witch. They find their way back to the father after a ride on a winged fish. At the end of the book is a "reading reinforcement" section that shows vocabulary, text comprehension, and phonics. The reinforcements do not seem to fit very well with this story. While the words are easy to recognize, they do not take advantage of the richness of this story. It is only the illustrations that provide any meaning and interest to go with the text. This early reader could provide a mild example of reading out loud, but there are many better choices of folk tales for early readers, such as those by Paul Galdone.
