Overview

A spicy attraction, a sweet small town, and a tasty mystery cook up a delectable romance. . .

Jemima George leads a charmed life in New York City as a personal chef to reality T.V.'s latest darling. But all that changes when her Aunt Caro suddenly dies under odd circumstances—bequeathing her a small café in picturesque New England. Jem intends to sell it and continue her fast-paced career—until her cheating boyfriend, and a deliciously sexy local contractor, lead her to re-think her recipe for happiness. . .

Jack Kerrigan considered Caro a surrogate mother and hates the idea of selling the cafe. But he loves the idea of beautiful, intriguing Jem staying in town as long as possible. If it means remodeling the cafe, Jack's all in. And when his jealous ex-wife, a shady attorney, and a slew of secrets threaten to extinguish Jack and Jem's simmering attraction, they might just add heat to a romance that's heading toward a full boil. . .

Jemima (Jem) inherits a cafe in a small coastal town and isn't quite ready at first to give up her big city New York job and boyfriend, but finds herself drawn to her contractor Jack, his family, the supportive small town community, and the potential to pursue her passion by reopening the cafe that was her late Aunt's legacy. The story has promising characters. I like Jem's strengths in confronting a career change, infidelity of a ex, her own insecurities, her claustrophobia, the new relationships, and ability to overcome dramatic challenges from the mystery plot points. Secondary characters, such as her best friend Reesa and Jack's family members are also well developed and three dimensional. Jack makes a classic great romantic lead - good looking, hard working, scarred by past relationships, but also cautious and caring. The story he tells durinf the morning sunrise scene on the pier is beautifully crafted, and later call back to that scene at the end of the story is a nice wrap. The writing is sometimes just plain fun -- playing darts in the pub, explaining why she can't wear a Yankees cap at a Boston hockey game, and the verbal showdown with Tessa and Dunk at the cafe. Sizzling dialogue, flirty comments, observations from the five year old twins, and lots of clever repartee between characters may make you smile. Kudos for those moments! The weaker sections are the references to the environmental ecoterrorist group, Jem's emotions regarding her brother's death, and the impact on Jem of the break in relationship with her parents, which could have used more detail. Also, for a novel whose primary character is a talented chef reopening a cafe, I wanted more realism in the cooking descriptives, and more feel for the frenetic pace of a commercial kitchen. Instead, except for the her scene in her kitchen where she is discovering Avery's career interests and conflicts, the "cooking" was mostly name dropping of favorite recipes, many out of place for the location setting of this story. Mystery plot elements were just ok. It felt like important foreshadowing clues were cliche throw away lines that could have had much greater effect if developed into full scenes with more detail earlier in the story. Jem's past is also a bit glossed over - hard to understand why she stayed in the same unsatisfying relationship for two years with the boyfriend Phil, who is using her for client contacts, and legal elements seem a bit unrealistic, both with the initial boyfriend character, Phil, and with Grant, the Aunt's attorney. However, the dialogue sizzles, the primary relationships are well crafted, including three dimensional relationships with secondary characters, and the primary relationship between Jem and Jack is given time to build realistically. Overall it's a satisfying romantic mystery read rating three stars.

I loved the way this book took me on a journey with Jem. I understood all her issues and rooted for her all the way. The hero is perfection. Of course, he has his own set of issues, including one crazy ex-wife. He's the most tender Alpha ever. So thoughtful and aware of his mates needs. Every time the heroine had doubts, I wanted to point out how perfect he is. A lot of the supporting cast made me want their story too. I can't wait to dive into the next Five Senses book. Great Story with delicious characters and just the right amount of mystery to keep you hanging at the edge of your seat.

A good romance plus a good mystery. It keeps a reader guessing who is responsible for an event that changed a lot of peoples' lives. Sometimes it takes an unfortunate situation to open our eyes to what is really important and to see where our careers should be.

I liked the book. It was a little predictable, but when a person reads as many books as I do, it is hard to find a book with a surprise.

Strong language, very adult sex scenes that last for too many pages. Unless, of course, you like that. Predictable plot but a decent read.

This book was awesome. Not for teens, due to sex. But the suspense was great, I was getting mad reading and waiting for something to happen at every turn of the page. I laughed hard at parts. This was just a great book!

A wonderful start to an amazing series. Well written story line, romance, and a little mystery. I will be reading the rest of the series. Don't let "reveiwers" who haven't even read the book yet turn turn you away from this great story. It is well worth the time!
