Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverly Melasi
Cake is a versatile dessert. There are fancy cakes for celebrations, such as birthdays and weddings, and simple cakes just for the fun of it. Cakes can have one layer or many. They can be topped with icing, whipped cream, powdered sugar, or nothing at all! Cakes can be hard or simple to make, depending on the recipe. Read the whole recipe before baking to make sure all the ingredients are at hand, and gather all the tools and equipment needed. Sometimes ingredients require preparation, such as chopped nuts or sifted flour. Those can be done ahead of time. Follow the recipe steps in the order they are listed. There are three ways to check whether your cake is done when it comes out of the oven. One, gently tap the center of the cake. If it is done, it will spring back up. Second, examine the edges of the cake. If it is pulled away from the sides of the pan, the cake is done. Three, stick a tester into the center of the cake and pull it back out; a tooth pick can be used. If no gooey batter sticks to the toothpick, the cake is done. Cupcakes are a little taste of Heaven. They are smaller than a cake, but the same ingredients go into making them. They can also be split into layers like a cake and decorated as lavishly as a cake or as simple as eating one unfrosted; right out of the cupcake pan. The colorful pictures and recipes in this book will entice adults and children alike to want to learn to bake. Parents can encourage their child to work independently. Kids can try any variations supplied with the recipes or experiment with their own ideas. There are colorful pictures of cooking utensils and baking ingredients so adults can explain everything to the child as they go along. Reviewer: Beverly Melasi
