Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Vicky Burkholder
Today's girls are not limited in their career choices--in fact, they have so many that it can be overwhelming. This series of books can help. Written in an easy-to-read format, each book focuses on a specific career area. In each case, the authors took a broad category and interviewed ten women who work in various areas of that category. In the book on computer careers, readers learn about a software engineer, sales executive, on-line specialist, network administrator, technology trainer, and five other women in related careers. The animal careers book includes a veterinarian, pet sitter, horse farmer, ostrich farmer, bird handler, and animal trainer, among others. The sports career title introduces players, instructors, officials, trainers, and a broadcaster. The format is identical for each book; only the subject changes. Interspersed with the interviews are sidebars giving brief information on famous women who have been noted for their work in the field. The book on animal careers includes blurbs on Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall; sports includes Billie Jean King and Wilma Rudolph. Each interview includes a brief description of the woman's background, education, personal life, and job history. It also includes an "if you like (animals, working with machines)..." personality checklist and salary range for that particular career. At the end of each book are words of advice from interviewees on how to get started in their careers, recommended books for further reading, lists of professional groups, and Internet sites. The computer book is the only one with a glossary, but the terminology in each is easily understood or defined within the context. The only drawback among the three titles is the computer book's heavy bias toward mainframes. In today's fast-changing world of technology that could be a detriment as more places move to PCs and servers. These are no-nonsense books that lay it on the line. They tell you how much time you will have to devote to be successful and how to juggle personal and professional lives. Although aimed specifically at girls, the information can be useful for anyone looking for a career idea. Currently there are three books available with three more to follow this year. They would all be good additions to any "careers" collection.
