Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Remy Dou
Colorful candle floaters, cinnamon air fresheners, and the perfect bubble bath—who would have thought chemistry could be so relaxing? Amidst colorful layouts lie ten cool activities sure to enliven the chemist in every reader. From creating jewelry out of plastic milk containers to making rock candy, girls will be engaged by these easy-to-do experiments. The best part is they may forget they are learning chemistry in the process. Important steps in each activity are demonstrated with photographs of diverse young women creating projects and having fun. Although designed to appeal to girls, it would not be surprising to find boys wanting to try some of these projects out—especially creating a messy fountain! Wheeler-Toppen sets out to engage and inspire blossoming young scientists with chemistry projects, and achieves just that. Parents and educators alike will be glad most required materials are inexpensive and can be found in a typical kitchen. As a classroom tool, the projects can engage even the most reluctant child (or teacher), but should be supplemented with leading questions that motivate students to pursue further investigation. The "Read More" section could help with that. A glossary and index are also included. As an introduction to the fun of chemistry, this book is strongly recommended. Part of the "Girls Science Club" series. Reviewer: Remy Dou
School Library Journal
Gr 4–8—Written to encourage girls to explore science, these books accomplish their goal. Featuring color photos of budding scientists at work, each title includes at least 10 experiments that can be conducted at home with fairly basic materials. The instructions are clearly written and indicate when adult help is necessary. "Insider Info" sections at the end of each experiment give an explanation of the science behind the activities. The complexity of the experiments varies within the volumes. For example, in Biology, readers are taught how to color flowers with food coloring as well as how to extract DNA from a banana. In Chemistry, they learn how to make "Peppermint Lip Balm" and "Earth-Friendly Plastic." Look elsewhere for more complex science fair-type experiments, but the ones here are fun and accessible.
