Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Robertson Mason
Is there a girl you know who is crafty and always looking for a fun project to do? How about an activity that will encourage someone's artistic side? This book, part of the "For Girls" series, is filled with ideas specifically designed to encourage creativity in girls. Included are ideas related to journaling, photography, sewing, and more. The book is organized by theme with each spread providing six or seven ideas or tips around that theme. For example, the section titled "Gorgeous Greetings" includes information on planning a greeting card, composing a rhyme for the inside, decorating the envelope, adding pop-ups, and creating personalized notepaper. The book is definitely "girl" in its look as well; the main color scheme is purple and yellow and it is formatted like a girl's notebook with lots of doodled flowers and swirls around the text. Despite the obvious cliches, the book has some useful information. The section on photography in particular is fairly comprehensive. There are, however, little to no directions on how to actually make anything. In some sections this works since the purpose is the encourage girls to express their own creativity; in other sections it might leave readers wanting. There are better books out there for those trying to learn a craft, but this is a good introduction for girls who are exploring their options or unsure of where to start. For reading teachers, this book is also filled with text features and short passages that would make struggling middle schoolers feel comfortable. Reviewer: Heather Robertson Mason
