He then shows young adults how to work through and manage their rage. Using guided exercises, quizzes and new tools, teens are taught to rate their improvement and transfer these much-needed skills to the real world.

Cool It! equips angry youths with new communication skills and coping mechanisms to express their anger calmly and in non-threatening words, which is, according to Hershorn, the healthiest way to vent anger. His proven methods will free young people from the grip of toxic anger by teaching them to cope with difficult emotions so they can deal with life more effectively.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Many teens must cope with the effect that anger has on their lives. Clinical psychologist and anger-management expert Hershorn shows how to deal with anger through examples of teens he has counseled and exercises that the reader can complete. Hershorn dispels teens' beliefs that psychiatry is negative. He discusses the effects of parents and mixed families, the problems created by physical and substance abuse, and dealing with anger over big events such as September 11. He explains how to recognize warning signs of anger and how to relax so that the response is not violent. Although he feels that reading the book on one's own will help the reader, he encourages families to read the book together. Many portions ask for the reader to explain the process of managing anger to his or her family ahead of time and to role play situations to make it easier to remember the steps when angry. Although most teens would not pick this book up on their own, it would be an excellent resource for guidance counselors or small groups dealing with anger management. The short chapters, quizzes, and activities make it an easy book for teens to work through. Each chapter begins with a quotation from a current popular song and ends with a box highlighting the important points covered. Teens who are beginning to recognize that their anger is out of control will find many excellent suggestions for ways to change their behavior. The book is a good resource for schools, counselors, or teens wanting to understand anger. Appendix.
