Cool Me Down

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David McGee
Idaho-born Jenai (she takes her name from an Ingrid Bergman film) has written songs for Sarah Evans and Mindy McCready, but it's the newcomer's vocal chops that take the lead on this impressive debut. Her voice stretches to the bluesy side of country and will evoke Wynonna comparisons on the sultry, swinging Cool Me Down. The songs are radio friendly but aren't overwhelmed by studio gloss; Judds producer Brent Maher avoids orchestrated bombast; Jenai's backing band stays rooted in hard country; and she sings with soul and conviction at every step, from the galvanizing, up-tempo "Cool Me Down" to the gritty, blue-eyed soul lament "It Won't Be Me." Jenai makes the Shania ...

Her voice stretches to the bluesy side of country and will evoke Wynonna comparisons on the sultry, swinging Cool Me Down. Jenai makes the Shania Twain-ish dance-hall romp "Don't Hold Back Your Heart" her own with her swaggering, sexy vocal. Her most impressive performance comes on the mid-tempo meditation "Time to Dream"; atop a subtle arrangement rich in acoustic and pedal steel guitars, Jenai's voice modulates beautifully between yearning and determined modes, rising to a heart-tugging cry in rich, harmonized choruses that recall vintage Forester Sisters. Cool Me Down is one of the year's standout debuts so far, and for Jenai, it sounds like she's just getting warmed up.
All Music Guide - Robert L. Doerschuk
Billed with one name and blessed with an assertive, expressive voice, Jenai makes an impressive debut with this collection of original tunes. Impeccable backup from a team of first-call Nashville cats certainly doesn't hurt, but the success of these tracks owes ultimately to the star. Her talent for digging deep into a lyric lends a dark and dangerous insinuation to the verses of "Be a Woman," while her equal facility for skimming over a dance beat adds to the Texas swing feel of "Papa Don't Ask, Mama Don't Know." Most striking are Jenai's performances on the wistful ballad "It Won't Be Me" and over the snappy backbeats of "Lyin' to My Heart": Intimate and soulful on the first, open-throated and resonant on the second, she echoes two strong and diverse aspects of Bonnie Raitt's style. More to the point, each of these songs feels tailor-made for Raitt. The fact that they share the same flaming hair color only confirms the impression that if Raitt ever wants to pass that torch to someone with maybe more of a country edge, a worthy acolyte may already be in line.

A NEW COUNTRY STAR IS BORN

I've heard a six song sampler for this album, and Jenai is the real deal. Forget Shania and Faith, Jenai is better looking than them both, and she has a voice that's only rivaled by Trisha, Patty Loveless and Wynonna. She's at home in all styles of country - ballads, rockin', country swing, and she performs everything flawlessly and effortlessly, without losing any enthusiasm. Get this album ASAP.
