Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverly Melasi
Apples, peaches, strawberries, blueberries, and cherries make yummy pies or tarts. Bringing creativity into the baking process enables young children to develop new skills, gain confidence, and make delicious treats while learning to bake. Adult supervision is a must though, whenever a child uses the oven, stove, or sharp tools, so permission is required to use the kitchen, cooking utensils, and ingredients. Preparation is a key element of successful baking. Make sure all the ingredients listed in the recipe are on hand, as well as all tools and equipment needed. The work area must be as clean and sanitary as possible. Tie back long hair. Wash hands with soap for at least twenty seconds before rinsing, and only clean tools and equipment. Precaution should be used when working around a hot surface like an oven. Always use oven mitts to remove a pie, not towels. Follow the recipe steps in the order listed to ensure a pie or tart turns out the right way. Unless the recipe says otherwise, always stir the dry ingredients together first. Mixing the wrong ingredients together at the wrong time could cause a recipe to fail. Pay attention to word order in the ingredients list. If it says "1 cup sifted flour," that means sift the flour and then measure it. The colorful pictures and recipes in this book will entice adults and children alike to want to learn to bake. Parents can encourage their child to work independently. Kids can try any variations supplied with the recipes and experiment with their own ideas. There are colorful pictures of cooking utensils and baking ingredients so adults can explain everything to the child as they go along. Reviewer: Beverly Melasi
