Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Phillips, a psychologist who specializes in chronic medical illness, provides a comprehensive, commonsensical book about coping with the devastating realities of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) that refreshingly examines the emotional as well as physical consequences of the disease. RA is chronic and episodic in nature, and Phillips encourages patients to take control by asking questions, challenging physicians and seeking second opinions. Phillips defines the disease in simple, lucid terms; he sorts out the quackery surrounding RA, explaining why certain lifestyle changes might or might not make a difference. For example, he explains that ``neither the spa nor the climate has a significant effect on the course of the disease, although either may be helpful in relieving symptoms.'' He also points out that denial is a commonand healthycoping strategy if it doesn't keep the RA patient from getting enough rest or taking medications. Chapters dealing with a patient's interaction with others and the responses of family members are particularly useful. (April)
Library Journal
Coping with Rheumatoid Arthritis offers ways to receive satisfying and supportive medical and psychological care. Phillips, a psychologist, examines the problems of rheumatoid arthritis, making observations and suggestions that can also be applied to other chronic diseases. He discusses interactions with people, lifestyle changes, travel, emotions, inflammations, pain, stress reduction, sex, and money, and covers child, young adult, and adult conditions. He does not provide specific exercises and diets, and only notes the implications of fish oil. A concise, readable format for those with the disease; health personnel; and spouses, families, and friends. Public and medical libraries will find this desirable.
