Coping with Ulcers, Heartburn and Stress-Related Stomach Disorders

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-An informative and thorough survey. Monroe discusses different types of ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, food intolerances and allergies of all types, and heartburn and acid reflux. Fictional scenarios involving teens suffering from different disorders run throughout the book, from the development of symptoms through the process of diagnosis and treatment. Since many of these procedures are quite invasive, the "case histories" help to take some of the fear out of seeking help by offering clear information in an empathetic format. The final three chapters give tips and advice on promoting good digestive health through fitness, a slower-paced approach to eating, and stress management. The author is quite sympathetic toward teens suffering the consequences of trying to deal with the hectic pace of today's world, and offers hope throughout. A more general treatment of digestion can be found in Regina Avraham's The Digestive System (Chelsea, 2000).-Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
