Coping with Weapons and Violence at School and on Your Streets

by Maryann Miller

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 7-12-- Research into existing studies and extensive interviews lend credence, depth, and clarity to this overview. Included are discussions on the roots of violence, weapons in modern society, gun control, the influence of the media, the cost of violent actions to society, gangs, juveniles and the criminal justice system, how to protect yourself, and successful programs for deterring school and community violence. Behavior that leads to fights is explored, as well as steps to follow to avoid confrontations. Miller quotes from a broad range of sources, philosophical and psychological studies, as well as contemporary newspapers. Most interviews with youth, if a location is stated, took place in Texas. All published works cited within the text are included in the bibliography; news and periodical articles, however, are not. Appendix articles, ``Protecting Yourself'' and ``Just the Facts,'' are useful as summaries. The index is adequate, but could be more extensive given the breadth of topics touched upon in the text. An objective and sane look at one of society's most serious problems, this book should find a large audience. --Gail Richmond, San Diego Unified Schools, CA
