Overview

Aaron Copland's music evokes stereotypical images of the American heartland: sprawling prairies, wagons on the trail, cowboys, and wholesome Shaker simplicity. So it may come as a shock to discover that Copland was born in bustling Brooklyn and was a lifelong New Yorker. Still, no other composer's music has been used so frequently -- in films and TV commercials -- to represent the pioneer spirit of the good ol' USA. Even folks who've never heard of Copland will recognize the "Hoedown" from "Rodeo," "Simple Gifts" from "Appalachian Spring," and the rousing, patriotic "Fanfare for the Common Man." Leonard Bernstein's performances had the composer's stamp of approval, and they have yet to be bettered.
