Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carolyn Mott Ford
"CoppTlia" is a ballet originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-LTon to music by LTo Delibes. It was inspired by "Der Sandman" by E. T. A. Hoffmann and was first performed in 1870. Prima ballerina Margot Fonteyn includes a back of the book, "Storyteller's Note on the Ballet." Swanila and Franz are a young engaged couple in a small village in Europe. Their happiness is threatened when Franz becomes smitten with a lovely girl sitting in the window of Dr. CoppTlius, the dollmaker. The girl who has won the heart of Franz is actually a doll, CoppTlia. The dollmaker considers CoppTlia his greatest creation because she is so lifelike and beautiful. Swanila plays a trick on her fiancee and the dollmaker and, in so doing, she wins back the heart of her beloved. The story is wonderfully illustrated in oil, acrylic and fabric on canvas. A lovely gift for the young ballet dancer.
Kirkus Reviews
The timeless tale of romance, suspicion, magic, and revenge is freshly retold, focusing on the feelings and actions of the characters: Dr. Coppélius as he comes to terms with his artistic gifts and broken dreams; Swanilda as she mischievously attempts to find the "daughter" of Dr. Coppélius; and Franz as he falls foolishly in love with a doll, but repents and wins Swanilda. The textured paintings—-oil painting lavished across nubby tweeds, lace, brocades, and other fabric—-highlight the events of this unforgettable story, sure to send balletomanes off in search of the nearest production of the ballet.
