Within the pages of very rare books, some centuries old, lie the secrets of the paranormal. Abby Radwell’s unusual psychic talent has made her an expert in such volumes – and sometimes, taken her into dangerous territory. After a deadly incident in the private library of an obsessive collector, Abby receives a blackmail threat, and rumors swirl that an old alchemical text known as The Key has reappeared on the black market.
Convinced she needs an investigator who can also play bodyguard, she hires Sam Coppersmith, a specialist in paranormal crystals and amber – “hot rocks.” Passion flares immediately between them, but neither entirely trusts the other. When it comes to dealing with a killer with paranormal abilities, and a blackmailer who will stop at nothing to obtain an ancient alchemical code…no one is safe.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Krentz (Fired Up) describes a world where people will kill to get their hands on a book, but this disappointing series starter is unlikely to inspire such fervor. Abby Radwell, a rare book dealer with paranormal talents, likes to keep her business in the shallow end of the underground market. After she’s held at gunpoint, she uses her abilities to escape, only to have a blackmailer threaten to reveal her talents. Sexy mad scientist Sam Coppersmith offers to protect Abby and track down the blackmailer if she’ll hunt down a dangerous encrypted book in exchange. But Sam is interested in more than a business relationship, and the way their auras resonate makes sparks fly. Unfortunately, the contrived story is peppered with character inconsistencies, romance clichés, and plot twists that fail to surprise. (Jan.)
Library Journal
Abby Radwell uses her psi-powers to incapacitate a crazed intruder who is after an encrypted alchemical book that she has the rare power to unlock. Now desperately needing help and protection upon receiving a blackmail threat, Abby heads for tiny Legacy Island and Sam Coppersmith, a reclusive paranormal crystal expert and the perfect person for the job—if only she can trust him. A deranged killer determined to claim his inheritance, old family enmities, and a pair of brainy, talented, well-matched protagonists drive the plot of this story that will keep fans intrigued as it spins the suspense out until the very end. VERDICT Wicked wit, psi-enhanced passion, and a delightfully twisted plot come together with sparkling precision as Krentz delivers another funny, sexy, suspenseful paranormal gem, the first in a new series. Krentz (In Too Deep) lives in Seattle. [See Prepub Alert, 7/10/11.]
Kirkus Reviews
In this launch of Krentz's Dark Legacy series, a psychic rare-book expert must wrest a valuable text from evildoers while resisting (or not) the uncanny charms of her client. Abby Radwell specializes in unlocking the secrets of a certain species of rare book, the kind that is encrypted with a psychic lock that can only be decoded by someone with special clairvoyance. Collectors of such codices are not your typical bookish antiquarians--since these tomes can wield dark powers, their aficionados usually have mixed motives for acquiring them. Referred by her mentor, Thaddeus Webber, Abby accepts an assignment from Sam Coppersmith, scion of a wealthy mining family, who occupies Copper Beach, his ancestral mansion on a remote island near Seattle. Abby's mission: Find a coded lab notebook that holds the key to unleashing the potentially deadly energy of crystals rescued decades ago from a destroyed Coppersmith mine. In the wrong hands, the book's secrets could trigger crystal Armageddon. The competition for the book has already impacted innocent victims: An elderly archivist is accosted in her home, and Thaddeus and a fellow book dealer die of suspicious heart attacks. Already on the run from a blackmailer and would-be kidnappers, Abby ignores her best friends' warnings to stay far, far away from Sam and the whole project. This is paranormal romance after all, and Sam and she have an instant, psychically augmented, unequivocally erotic connection. Besides, she needs a bodyguard and someone to interrupt her sleepwalking episodes, during which she tends to set things on fire. Appropriately enough, legacies figure heavily in the plot. Among the suspects trawling for the book are Lander, who believes the Coppersmiths stole his inheritance, and Abby's snooty step-relatives the Stricklands, who have every intention of cutting Abby out of the will until somebody unwittingly bets their fortune on the lab-book quest. Although the stakes are far-fetched and fanciful, the suspense never flags, and such ado over print material carries its own nostalgic allure.

From intriguing characters with a little extra, to a new puzzle to solve, Ms. Krentz delivers another wonderful story that envelopes you. For the first time in many novels, the Arcane Society is nowhere to be seen but we meet a new family with secrets to keep. The Coppersmiths, I hope will be around for 'books' to come. I can see so many interesting possibilites, I can hardly wait for my next visit through Ms. Krentz's world.

I always enjoy Ms. Krentz’s books, and this was no exception. She writes with style and panache, creating delectable candy books that I love to devour. Copper Beach was a good opening effort to a new series; however I do feel that much of the creative force in this book was spent on set-up for future installments and not particularly on the story within it. The characterization in a lot of places seemed a bit rushed, and some of the secondary characters felt a little like space-holders, awaiting future books to actually mean anything. The plot also felt the pinch of a new series start-up, spending lots of time cementing elements for future use and wrapping up this story with a hat-trick. I feel that this series has lots of room to grow, and I will enjoy taking the journey with these characters and exploring the world that is being created, but there is still a ways to go before we get to that complete world or fleshed-out series. This is the first book from Ms. Krentz in quite some time that has not been a part of her Arcane Society series. While I happened to thoroughly enjoy the Arcane series I do understand the need to do different things and that all of Ms. Krentz’s fans might not want to only read in that universe. That said, as far as I can see the biggest difference so far in her Dark Legacy series vs. the Arcane is the history and known secondary characters. We are still immersed in the world of the paranormal, but this time we’re working without a net. Abby Radwell was an interesting character, and I happen to adore the concept of her being able to “unlock” psychic code in books. Her history was richly woven even if she bore a lot of the brunt of working without a net when it came to dealing with the peculiarly of her paranormal gifts. With that in mind I found it a bit difficult to embrace her easy acceptance of our hero Sam Coppersmith. With Sam we have a different story. The rare earths and ability to psychically interact with crystals I had zero problem with, I also dig his near-genius talents in designing and creating mechanical mechanisms based on that crystal ability. Sam turned out to be the well-rounded character in this book for me, even if much of his past and endeavors remain hidden.

Contemporary paranormal/adventure romance. Dangerous adversaries are seeking the secret of powerful crystals discovered years earlier. Abby is the only one who can decode the psychically encrypted lab book that describes how to unleash their power. Sam Coppersmith comes to her aid to protect her from would-be kidnappers and murderers. Typical Krentz, with enough twists to keep it from being too predictable. Enjoyable light read. As always, the interactions between the two leads is great. Spicy romance, but nothing over the top. Love the suspense. I'll be sure to buy the next books in the series.

Totally adicted to Jayne Ann Krentz/Jayne Castle/Amanda Quick books this one does not disappoint. The first book in a new series this is exciting. More pseudo science than the Arcane books this is a good fit both for those who like the Arcane series of books and for tnose who prefer their fiction reading without the paranormal.

I enjoyed reading this book. I have always enjoyed reading Jayne Ann Krentz's books, no matter what name she goes under. It is a paranormal mystery with the paranormal powers in crystals and books. It is also a delightful love story between Sam and Abby. The best part of the book for me takes place on Sam's remote island. His family has their own island. Sam has a unique laboratory in the basement of his house. Some people believe that Sam killed his ex-fiancee but the islanders believe in him. They believe that he's too smart to have killed someone and then left obvious clues to himself. A party is given by Sam's family on the island but of course, it's not a simple party.

I miss the j.a.k. stories that she used to "coral kiss", "golden chance" etc. Ms. Krentz's stories the last several years have been a cold romance with a lot of science
