Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Cowie, founding editor of International Film Guide and author of several books on cinema, traces the career of the flamboyant director of The Godfather , Apocalypse Now , The Conversation and other controversial movies. Describing Coppola's filmmaking techniques and analyzing his plots, the author shows how the director's inventiveness, as well as such aspects of his personal life as his Italian heritage, have influenced his work. In Cowie's adulatory view, Coppola has continued to forge ahead boldly, undeterred by box-office failures ( One from the Heart and Gardens of Stone ), the ups and downs of Zeotrope, his film studio, or the tragedy of the death of his oldest son in a boating accident. Nevertheless, Coppola the man remains elusive in this biography. Illustrations not seen by PW. (June)
Library Journal
On the heels of Michael Goodwin and Naomi Wise's On the Edge: The Life and Times of Francis Coppola LJ 9/15/89 comes another major biography of director Francis Ford Coppola. Cowie's book, first published in Great Britain 1989, is doubly unsatisfying. Although chock full of biographical details and occasional discussions of the films, its unbridled adoration of the man as hero-filmmaker makes it superficial for the scholarly reader. And matinee idolaters are likely to feel that they don't get enough inside dope on who the man really is and what makes him tick. The book doesn't have the clarity of the author's earlier Ingmar Bergman: A Critical Biography LJ 10/15/82, which provides much detail on the films and what they mean in human terms. Libraries should stick with On the Edge, which reads well, and is more scholarly to boot.--Robert Rayher, Sch. of the Art Inst. of Chicago
Booknews
The story of how the maker of the critically and financially successful films The Godfather, The Conversation, and Apocalypse Now could also go over $20 million into debt with the failure of One from the Heart. Research and interviews with Coppola look at the director's rise to prominence, the turmoil in his personal life, his intermittent failures, and resurgent successes. Annotation c.
