Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
The world of the coral reef is one of the most colorful, diverse and magical in the world. However, unless young readers live near coral reefs and can scuba dive, they will probably never get to see one up close. This book, part of the "Watery Worlds" series, offers the next best thing to being there. With its colorful, compelling format, the book begins with a basic question" what is a coral reef, anyway? How are coral reefs formed? Illustrations of corals, from brain coral which resembles a human brain, to stag horn coral that looks like deer antlers, are lush and colorful. Especially interesting are the author's description of coral reef inhabitants and how they all come together to make up the everyday life and health of a reef. Colorful fish have thin, flat bodies that enable them to move around easily. Some have strong teeth, for scraping algae, or long thin snouts to catch prey in small crevices. Some animals live on other creatures as helpful ride-alongs, while big reef hunters, like groupers or barracuda swim by to look for smaller fish. The book is packed with facts about sea stars, worms and tube worms, deadly hunters like box jellyfish or blue ringed octopus plus cold water corals. It also goes into detail about the Indian Ocean. With a glossary and index, this book is a welcome addition to any library. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
