Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Coral reefs are so extraordinary and rare (there aren't many within easy travel of the U.S.) that most young readers who have seen them in aquariums are lucky—and impressed—to see them. This book immerses the reader into this colorful underwater world right away, with its exquisite illustrations. Tropical fish and shellfish all glide within the "forest" of growing, living colonies of polyps that make a coral reef. Larger creatures such as sharks or sea turtles swim overhead. Sea stars may edge past anemones and tube worms, all labeled as the reader goes along. Simple, clear text explains what coral reefs are, where they are in the world, how they are formed, what elements are harmful to coral reefs, and coral reefs that are in danger. Close-up drawings feature specifics and "Fun Facts" scattered among the pages add more information to the mix. For instance, only the outer layer of coral reefs contains polyps. Think of a coral reef as a city full of skyscrapers all empty except the top floor. The book includes a list of coral reef facts, glossary, index, list of books to read, websites and—best of all—instructions to make a coral reef diorama with easy-to-find supplies. This is a book so colorful and full of facts, few young readers will be able to resist picking it up. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
