Description: Because psychiatry is unique in the practice of medicine in that each diagnosis is made using a combination of symptoms which create a syndrome, obtaining a detailed history takes on added importance. This work attempts to highlight the vital nature of this aspect of the psychiatric evaluation.
Purpose: Written to illustrate the process of assessing and diagnosing psychiatric illness using clinical case scenarios common in mental health settings, this work addresses each major diagnostic category using five or six core cases followed by brief but comprehensive discussions.
Audience: Although useful for anyone interested in understanding how psychiatric diagnoses are assigned, the target audience is medical students early in their clinical training.
Features: Each chapter explores between five and seven clinical cases (as well as at least two "OSCE counseling cases") using a format that includes a presentation of the scenario, a discussion of the differential diagnosis, an explanation of the historical information supporting and refuting the proposed diagnoses, addressing etiological factors consistent with the working diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis. Each chapter also contains a list of key concepts related to the major diagnostic category addressed.
Assessment: This update is necessary given how dynamic the field of psychiatry continues to be. The cases outlined in these chapters are relevant and capture a realistic view of psychiatric practice without the sterile feel often associated with similar educational materials. Minor adjustments are required for North American readers, as psychiatric diagnoses there tend to follow conventions outlined by the DSM-IV, while the diagnoses in this work are based on the nomenclature associated with ICD codes. Similarly, adjustments are needed to view the small font, which can be difficult to read for those edging closer to middle age and beyond. Overall, however, this is a well-done book that contributes to the field both through its approach and its content.
