Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Theresa P. Yeo, MSN, MPH, CRNP (Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing)
Description: This book addresses the fundamental advanced practice nursing (APN) curricular issues related to nursing theory, health promotion, role development, ethics, health policy formulation, cultural diversity, and healthcare delivery. It is unusual to find one book that covers these diverse topics in such depth.
Purpose: As described in the preface, the editors' goal is to develop an APN text that represents the essential educational content of an MSN program in a single source. They have achieved this goal with remarkable style and readability.
Audience: This book is written for APN students, specifically those in clinical nurse specialist, nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, and nurse midwifery programs, and for the faculty who teach in these programs. The editors and the contributing authors are highly credible and authoritative sources of knowledge about advanced practice nursing.
Features: The book not only covers the basic components of MSN education, but also includes outstanding chapters on cultural diversity related to the changing demographics of the U.S., population and minority representation in the nursing workforce, and relaxation and stress management techniques for promoting a healthy lifestyle. The chapter on alternative and complementary therapies (integrative therapies) is most welcome. Research implications, advanced clinical nursing practice considerations, and stimulating discussion questions are incorporated into each chapter. Additionally, most chapters include current Web site addresses for those seeking more information on a topic.
Assessment: This is an excellent, comprehensive book that will be invaluable to APN students and educators alike. Each section stands alone, obviating the need to read the entire book, but it is so readable that one may want to!
