Description: This is the second edition of a review of the science and clinical application of airway management in the operating room and intensive care unit.
Purpose: The book presents the perspective of senior consultants in the U.K.
Audience: Trainees and students seeking a concise introduction to airway management in anesthesiology, emergency medicine, surgery, and critical care are an appropriate audience for this work from leaders in anesthetic practice.
Features: Five chapters introduce the physiology of airway management and gas exchange. Subsequent chapters cover airway physiology and review available methods for airway management. The final third of the book describes airway management in specific settings, including pediatrics, obstetrics, bariatrics, dental and maxillofacial surgery, and cervical spine disease. Special considerations in the ICU are also reviewed. Two final chapters discuss ethical and legal issues. A concluding chapter presents sample oral examination questions for board preparation. Chapters are well written and make excellent use of high quality line drawings and color photographs. The ample references from primary literature include citations dating to within one to two years of publication.
Assessment: This edition is appropriately updated from the first edition published six years ago. I was impressed with the review of physiology and the willingness of editors and authors to describe areas of controversy in acute airway management. Unfortunately, human factor management with the difficult airway is just briefly described. Nonetheless, from physiology to fine points, this is an excellent introduction to a central topic in anesthesiology and acute medicine.
