Before she was a King, Coretta Scott had a very interesting childhood in which she loved to play outside and climb trees with her friends, also making time to spend with her beloved father. A quick-witted child, she could not understand why she was treated differently than white people. As a result, she had many conversations about discrimination with her sister Edythe, who is a few years older than Coretta. Stanley's story also showcases the relationship between Coretta and her younger brother, Obie Leonard. The picture book also offers a great deal of information about her parents—especially her father and his struggle of trying to earn money to support his family (and send Coretta and Edythe to high school in Marion and eventually send them to college) in Alabama in the late 1930s. After graduating from college, Coretta received a call from a minister, Martin Luther King Jr., because of a mutual friend, who was ultimately playing matchmaker. Coretta and Martin were married on June 18, 1953. They worked together for many years with the Civil Rights Movement; however, on April 4, 1968 at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Martin was assassinated. Coretta spent the rest of her life after Martin's death furthering his ideals and making his dream come true. She also led the campaign for his birthday to become a national holiday. This rendition of Coretta's life proves that typical textbooks are not required to be able to study the life of a national figure.
