Overview

Beset by marriage-minded relatives, Sir Richard Wyndham nearly plunged into a dutiful betrothal. But just in time, lovely, impulsive Penelope Creed climbed out a window—and into his arms. Dressed as a boy, Pen was escaping her own demanding relatives, and wanted only to return to her childhood estate. Sir Richard refused to permit a young lady to travel unescorted, no matter what her garb. But upon discovering his charge meant to ride a mail coach, the sophisticated lord nearly changed his mind! Still, before long, marriage wasn 't looking quite the evil it had been—if he had the right bride in his arms...

Editorial Reviews

A Hidden Place
I adored this book. I adore Heyer. I want to go out and gobble up everything she ever wrote and I will. Slowly and deliciously.
— Heather Fargis
From The Critics
The Corinthian is a light-hearted comedy of manners... This is one Heyer I'll be revisiting soon.
— Danielle Torres

    A Good Read

My mom bought me a couple of Georgette Heyer books because she loved them when she was young and they are good, clean, romance novels. I now enjoy all of them. They provide a good, easy, read with cute stories. The inexpensive paperbacks can go anywhere, and I call them my "bathtub reading".

    Not Just Another Romance Writer

Georgette Heyer deserves better covers! The ones she usually gets make her look no different than the 100s of wannabes that came after her, and could do nothing but get the framework right--an anatomically correct body without an animating spark! Heyer continues to be read and reprinted because of the quality and wit of her writing--her meticulous historical research, her delightfully sharp and often humorous dialogue. One doesn't read her for the plots: 'What the devil does the plot signify, except to bring in fine things?' And the Corinthian, with the elegant Sir Richard, the endlessly inventive Pen, and the colorful Jimmy Yarde (whose speeches are an enduring delight to me) make this novel full of very fine things!

    A lovely regency romp

A great romp. Very readable, with lots of comic moments. I love Heyer's writing - she immerses herself in the Regency period, and it simply flows from her pen. She presents nothing in her story that does not have a purpose in it. Great characterizations. No disjointed/vague/fumbling narratives here. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

    My Favorite Georgette Heyer Book

'The Corinthian' was the first Georgette Heyer book I read - I picked up a 1966 edition and, boy, am I glad I did - and it still remains my favorite. Sir Richard Wyndham, about to make a marriage proposal to a woman he doesn't love due to family pressures, comes across Penelope Creed (Pen, if you will) dropping out of the second-floor window of her aunt's house, and life is never the same for this very proper, fashionable gentleman. Pen is so delightfully cheerful and innocent, and we can see Sir Richard, despite his proper and stern manners, falling for her. Witty and charming with quite a few funny moments, 'The Corinthian' is just delightful, and Pen and Sir Richard remain my favorite Heyer couple.
