Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Melissa Hower
.In this Level One story, two children become friends with a farmer as they watch a crop of corn grow. From beginning to end, the children journey through the growing process with the farmer. They watch as the farmer prepares the field for planting when the air is still cool and the trees are bare. As they ride by the farm on their bikes in early spring, they observe him as he plants the seeds. The children watch as the farmer nurtures the plants until the corn is ready to be picked. He picks the corn, and the children help the farmer sell his corn at the farm stand. The farmer thanks the children by giving them corn. The story concludes with the children enjoying dinner with the farmer. This is a sweet book in which children will learn about the process of growing corn while enjoying a developing friendship between a farmer and two children. The big type, repetitive phrases, and picture clues make this book a good choice for children that are beginning to show an interest in reading. This book is part of the "Step into Reading" series. This book would be a nice addition to any home or preschool/kindergarten library. Reviewer: Melissa Hower
Kirkus Reviews
This Step 1 entry into the Step into Reading series gives teachers the opportunity to branch out from apples and pumpkins in their farm units. Readers accompany a pair of blond siblings as they watch the changes that occur on a local corn farm. They first drive by the farm in late winter when the trees are bare and the farmer is plowing the field. As the leaves appear they ride by on bikes and watch the planting of the corn. And so the seasons go, until it is time to walk to the farm stand and help the farmer sell the corn. In keeping with the level of the text, the sentences are short, with simple vocabulary that concentrates on verbs, nouns and adjectives and allows the illustrations to provide the context clues needed by beginning readers. Iwai's large, richly colored illustrations and a generous font make this a good choice for sharing with groups. A nice addition to school libraries looking to expand on the farm topic. (Early reader. 4-6)
