From The CriticsReviewer: Surendra Basti, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This book represents a complete, exhaustive, and comprehensive resource of information on corneal disease.
Purpose: This third edition builds on the previous editions and provides up-to-date information on corneal disease in both electronic and print format. These objectives — providing up-to-date information in both formats — are critical for optimal utility of a textbook and this third edition meets them.
Audience: The target audience includes both students and practitioners. The breadth, language and presentation contribute to making this a one-stop source of corneal information for students and specialists alike. This multiauthored book is written by the best minds in the fraternity of corneal specialists.
Features: "The first of the two volumes covers fundamentals and medical aspects of corneal and external disease. Volume 2 covers surgical procedures of the cornea and conjunctiva, while an accompanying DVD provides video footage of many of the procedures, which is invaluable to readers. The section on refractive surgery is well written, but is probably not required in a cornea book subtitled "Fundamentals, Diagnosis and Management." The quality of clinical photographs and illustrations is uniformly superior throughout the book. Accessing the electronic version of the book via the Expert Consult website is as easy as it is welcome, providing access to the book via the Internet from anywhere. However, I was unable to view video footage via the website. "
Assessment: This is an authoritative, well-written, and invaluable source of information on cornea and external disease. It is a must-have for all corneal specialists and residency programs. It is several notches above any other textbook in this area. The third edition is a timely update, with the considerable developments in many areas of this specialty since the previous edition. These major advances — especially corneal transplant techniques, imaging and diagnostic techniques, understanding of corneal pathophysiology and ocular surface disease — are thoroughly covered in this edition. Hence, owners of a previous edition may do well to consider buying this new edition.
