    Why is cricket a religion in India?

    Outsiders always gasp at the extent of support for the game of cricket in the subcontinent. Guha has shown us the evolution of cricket as a religion and in doing so has introduced us to unheralded early indian cricketers that played in the quadrangulars. the single greatest feature of this treatise is the the author refrains from providing his opinions. He simply gives you the facts and all the relavent research. He doesnt over-glorify people like Ranji, Vizzy, or Harris. This is defenitely a must read for any one who wants to see the game from a new PERSPECTIVE.

    The impact of time and colonization on a traditional British pastime

    This is an excellent book. It traces the inpact of different cultures on the evolution of a pastime that is a British tradition. The book traces the history of cricket as it spread to the old British colonies, especially India. It is a vivid description of its evolution from a game of leisure that took five days to its tranformation into a competitive one day match. A five day game of cricket is may result in a "draw" with no clear winner. The author links the immense appeal of this aspect of the game for Indians to the Hindu values of negotiation and compromise. A must read for all cricket fans.
