Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Airships, steam-powered machines, clockwork automatons, Martians, and goggles reign supreme in this genuinely entertaining collection. From the delightfully gruesome tale of a cannibalistic mermaid on a murderous rampage to the story of a bold heiress who secretly makes and sells elaborate bombs, these selections by 13 different authors contain a unique sampling of steampunk stories. Most are traditional romances with hopeful, if not happy, endings, such as Adrienne Kress's "The Clockwork Corset," a tale of childhood sweethearts who face the greatest test to their relationship on a battlefield. However, a few take a wider view of the concept of romance, marriage, and love, such as Caitlin Kittredge's strangely ethereal "The Vast Machinery of Dreams," in which a writer is consumed by the source of his inspiration. While not every story is exceptional, all are engaging. Some of them contain challenging vocabulary and concepts; however, the action and romance in the other selections would make them good choices for reluctant readers. The common flaw is that the stories end too soon, just when readers have begun to fall in love with the steampunk worlds the writers have created.—Heather M. Campbell, formerly at Philip S. Miller Library, Castle Rock, CO
Kirkus Reviews

Simply sticking a few gears in does not steampunk make, no matter what the subtitle says.

The 13 stories, from a range of authors including several who have previously written mostly for adults, range from romance to horror, cover a gamut of times and places and include both the sublime and the sublimely bland. The opening story has both corsets and clockwork but little real depth, and at least four stories are more romantic fantasy (of varying quality) with a few elements meant to evoke a steampunk ethos. Others take some elements of the genre and transport it (with fair success) to the American south of the '50s and Nazi-occupied Poland. The best stories are those that most closely adhere a fairly traditional definition of steampunk in manners, machinery and punk spirit, like Frewin Jones' weirdly wonderful "The Cannibal Fiend of Rotherhithe," with its half-mer cannibal heroine and a plucky boy who might be true love or just a snack; Adrienne Kress' "The Clockwork Corset," high romance with a spunky cross-dressing heroine; and Kiersten White's excellent closing tale, "Tick, Tick, Boom," whose narrator is a machinist and noble's daughter who falls for an anarchist.

All in all, a diverse and too-often off-topic collection that's not steamy enough in either sense of the word but is partly redeemed by a few gems. (introduction, author biographies) (Steampunk/fantasy/romance anthology. 12 & up)

    more from this reviewer

    Great book!

I loved this book! Those who are fans of Steampunk will loved it. There are some great amazing stories. I loved reading this and being immerse in this world. I am anxious to see where some of these stories will go. I would love to see some of these stories but full novels.

I loved being introduced to new authors. Lesley Livingston is one author I heard of and never read any of her works. Her story and her writing amazed me! I am so picking up for her books. There are many other great authors who blew me away with their stories.
