Description: This book specifically addresses hyperpigmentation issues, scarring, and specific reactivity patterns and precautions to consider when performing laser, peels, surgery, etc., on patients with darker skin types. An excellent chapter by Zoe Draelos discusses using bleaching agents for melasma.
Purpose: The purpose is to enhance the knowledge of dermatologists treating patients with darker skin types. After reading this book, you should be more comfortable in making appropriate skin recommendations for these patients to minimize post-procedure hyperpigmentation problems and treating hyperpigmentation, scarring, and melasma.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists.
Features: Unlike many books on cosmetic dermatology, this one actually discusses parameters used in treating patients and names specific products that are used in skin care regimens. There are helpful suggestions and tips on what to expect when treating darker skin types and how to minimize unwanted hyperpigmentation and irritation, which can lead to the former. The numerous color photographs are of excellent quality. Photos illustrate how the skin looks before and immediately after the procedure. The chapters are easy to understand and well written. There is some redundancy in the repetition of laser physics at the beginning of all the chapters discussing laser treatment.
Assessment: This book is informative about treating patients with darker skin and I would recommend it to any dermatologist who sees these patients. The authors' presentations are unbiased and their conclusions are clear. I know I will reread many of the chapters when I see patients with skin types 4-6.
