This book further develops Professor Seaford's innovative work on the study of ritual and money in the developing Greek polis. It employs the concept of the chronotope, which refers to the phenomenon whereby the spatial and temporal frameworks explicit or implicit in a text have the same structure and uncovers various such chronotopes in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter and in particular the tragedies of Aeschylus. Mikhail Bakhtin's pioneering use of the chronotope was in literary analysis. This study by contrast derives the variety of chronotopes manifest in Greek texts from the variety of socially integrative practices in the developing polis – notably reciprocity, collective ritual, and monetised exchange. In particular, the tragedies of Aeschylus embodies the reassuring absorption of the new and threatening monetised chronotope into the traditional chronotope that arises from collective ritual with its aetiological myth.

Richard Seaford is Professor of Ancient Greek at the University of Exeter. His publications range from Homer to the New Testament and include commentaries on Euripides' Cyclops (1984) and Euripides' Bacchae (1996), Reciprocity and Ritual: Homer and Tragedy and the Developing City-State (1994) and Money and the Early Greek Mind: Homer, Philosophy, Tragedy (2004). In 2009 he was President of the Classical Association.

    ANNABELLS MISTAKE

    I must have slept longer than just that dream because the next thing I know Sally is gentlly shaking my shoulder. "Wake up, wake up, wwwaaakkkeee uuuppp!" The urgency in her voice doesnt match the way shakes my arm. Suddenly im afraid. "D-did something happen?" I ask groggy from sleep. "Not here but we need to talk. All of us." Sally replies. "Hunter thinks you know something but youre keeping it from us." I groan and look at him. "What?" he asks throwing his hands in the air like hes inocent, " Im worried about you. Something happened between the fight with the monster and when you took over watch. We just dont know what." I look at the three faces expectently looking at me for answers and I know I cant chrush them with the truth. "Im honnerd and all that you care guy, but really its nothing. I have just been thinking a lot more lately." My lie sounds almost convincing but I can tell they dont buy it. "The monster atack got me thinking about what would happen if I cant get the Fleece. And," I decide to throw a bit of the truth in, "What would happen if any of us get hurt. What if Im leading you into a trap?" "Well we are all here together so no matter what happens remember that were in this together. As a team." Andrea says and the other two nodd in agreement. They dont fully believe me, I can see it in there eyes, but at least they arent worried anymore. Silence falls over us. "We should restock our food supply. Anyone care to help me?" Sally asks. I turn and look out the train window. Shes right, we need food. "Lets all go." I suggest pushing away the memory of the boys face. I really need a break. (Next one is at 'repi'. And if you havent seen 'swed' res 1-3 you should check them out)
