This is the 2nd edition of a highly successful title on this fascinating and complex subject. Concentrating primarily on the theory behind the origin and the evolution of the universe, and where appropriate relating it to observation, the new features of the this addition include:

  • An overall introduction to the book
  • Two new chapters: Gravitational Lensing and Gravitational Waves
  • Each part has a collection of exercises with solutions to numerical parts at the end of the book
  • Contains a table of physical constants
  • The addition of a consolidated bibilography

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Because of limited space and a preference of interest, Coles (physics and astronomy, U. of Nottingham, UK) and Lucchin (astronomy, U. di Padova, Italy) choose to concentrate on those issues of cosmology that are pertinent to theories of the origin and evolution of cosmic structure such as galaxies and clusters. Nineteen chapters cover the basics of general relativity, simple cosmological models, observational cosmology, the thermal history of the universe, the theory of gravitational instability in the linear and nonlinear regimes, dark-matter theories, hydrodynamical effects in the context of galaxy formation, the fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background, galaxy-peculiar motions, and observations of galaxy evolution and the extr agalactic radiation backgrounds. Some of the text is based upon an English adaptation of Introduzione alla Cosmologia (Zannichelli, Bologna, 1990), an Italian textbook written by Lucchin. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
