Cossacks in Art
The Cossacks are a predominantly East Slavic Orthodox Christian people originating in the Pontic–Caspian steppe of eastern Ukraine and southern Russia
Historically, they were a semi-nomadic and semi-militarized people who were allowed a great degree of self-governance in exchange for military service.
They inhabited sparsely populated areas in the Dnieper, Don, Terek, and Ural river basins, and played an important role in the historical and cultural development of both Ukraine and parts of Russia.
The Cossacks used small and ugly horses that needed little fodder and could eat whatever was available in the vast forests in what is today Belarus where Napoleon used large horses that needed proper fodder which was not available and heavy wagons that sank into the mud roads. See authors´ books Napoleon in Russia and Cossacks Józef Brandt Painter
But the Cossacks also had larger, beautiful animals, of course and treasured them. Several of the artists in this book show much better horses than Józef Brandt´s Cossacks have.
We show you paintings of 29 artists, two of whom are unknown.
They depict the life, mostly in military service, of the Cossacks. The last surprise if that of guarding transports of gold from Siberia. Everywhere the horse features prominently, with artists so brilliantly showing this beautiful animal.
We hope you will enjoy our selection of paintings featuring Cossacks.
