Overview

Fixing the home can heal the heart-if you can find all the pieces.

Police officer Samuel Briggs is getting to know the people on his new, third-shift beat, but he'd prefer they not know too much about him-or the painful past that drove him away from New Mexico to start fresh in small-town Stratton, PA.

All he wants is peace, a manageable routine, and time to fix up his project home. There's no room in his broken heart for a new relationship. It's crowded with too many memories. But there's something about the Dixie's Cup short-order cook, who's flirty one minute, distracted the next, that piques Sam's interest.

Part-time cook, part-time hardware salesman and full-time handyman Rey King lives to work-but not because he loves it. Relationships? No time. Until one glance at Sam's haunted eyes sends a plumb line straight to his wary heart.

One afternoon of impulsive, no-strings sex begins to grow into a cautious friendship. But when Rey is seriously injured protecting a friend, the cracks in their already shaky foundation begin to show. Falling in love wasn't in either man's recovery plan...and this time, the risk could be too great.

Warning: Contains one emotionally wrecked cop, one angsty short-order cook, a few too many secrets, some meddling small-town folk, and plenty of hot man-on-man action.

I LOVE Sam and Rey--this was a great story, full of emotion, just the right amount of backstory, and yes--hot manlove :) The writing was crisp, clear, and focused. I've read the others in the series--they're just as good. Don't miss these!,

First of all, FINALLY a book of decent length. I am so tired of short stories and novelettes that seem to plague ebooks lately. I enjoyed this story immensely. Every character was thought out and had enough background to engage. The story itself was complex enough to add new directions whenever things started to get a little too pat. Not all of the storylines are complete at the end of the book, but enough so that you are not disappointed. I immediately bought a few more to follow up, clever and insightful of the author to keep the series going. Briggs (the cop with a past) and Rey (short order cook that never gets a break) were written well and supported by the diverse small town cast around them Many of the secondary characters were interesting enough to warrant books of their own. I looked forward to turning each page, and am anxious to get started on the next book.

bookshelves: grabs-my-heart, m-m, made-me-smile, made-me-think, mc-to-love Read from March 24 to 25, 2015 3 1/2 stars. Samuel was making a new start after losing his long time partner. It was the kind of midsized town and environment Samuel could feel safe in. Not as anonymous as the big city, but not as close-knit and closed-off as a very small town. HE needed this. He glanced at Rey's back, watching the muscles under his T-shirt flex and bunch as he cooked. Rey wasn't handsome, exactly, but he had a boyish cuteness-wide eyes, sharp cheekbones, button-nose. Not that Samuel could do anything except look and admire. He was still too new in town to make something like that public knowledge, and besides, it wasn't as if Rey was interested. He worked in an all-night coffee shop-slash-diner-the friendly, joking personality wa practically a job requirement. Rey works at a diner and has his own history to bear. He had secrets that he did not share with Samuel. They have instant heat but trust takes a while. He clasped Rey's hand with his left and felt that same shock of awareness. Rey inhaled sharply then swallowed.Samuel slid his free hand around Rey's neck, loosely cupping the base of his skull, and tilted Rey's head up as Samuel drew down. Their mouths met in a close-lipped kiss that quelled the butterflies in his stomach. Everything seemed to disappear in a haze of white noise and nothing existed except the warm lips pressing to his. It was tentative, practically a question. I liked that not everything had an answer as that is life. It also leaves room for a sequel. Sometimes I got irritated at the repeated "I won't ask as it is up to him to tell me" comments although it might be nice to have someone with so much patience. I did love the two MCs though. I will read more of this author and hope for more of Samuel and Rey.
