Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Donna Freedman
This paperback picture book focuses on basic skills: math, colors and shapes. Its rhyming prose moves from 1 + 1 up to 11 + 1, and then back down to zero. The actual addition or subtraction is off to the side of each page, reinforcing the verse. Alaskan animals such as moose, bears, whales, walrus and puffins cavort through the pages, and each is part of a color lesson as well as a math transaction.. Some of those hues are ordinary, and some-cinnamon, blueberry, rust, vanilla-will gently stretch a kid's way of thinking. A couple of those rhymes are also a bit of a stretch, but the use of Alaskan animals and the fresh way of teaching math concepts tend to outweigh clunkers like "Eight pink porcupines/All named Kevin/Play hide 'n' seek/Until there are seven."
