Overview

In all his years in the Chicago Fire Department, Lieutenant Reed Solliday has never experienced anything like this recent outbreak of house fires—devastating, vicious, and, in one case, homicidal. He has another problem—his new partner, Detective Mia Mitchell. She's brash, bossy, and taking the case in a direction he never imagined.

Mia's instincts tell her the arsonist is making this personal. And as the infernos become more deadly, one look at the victim's tortured faces convinces her and Reed that they must work closer to catch the killer. With each new blaze, the villain ups the ante, setting firetraps for the people Reed and Mia love. The truth is almost too hot to handle: This monster's desire for death and destruction is unquenchable...and for Mia he's started the countdown to an early grave.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Rose cranks up the heat in more ways than one for recurring heroine Det. Mia Mitchell, last seen in You Can't Hide, to deliver another winning romantic mystery thriller. When a series of arsons turns out to hide a homicide, Mia teams up with Chicago Fire Department Lt. Reed Solliday to track down the firebug killer. Still reeling from her father's death and her last case, which landed her partner, Abe, in the hospital, Mia's not pleased to be teaming up with someone new—especially with Abe's assailant still on the loose. Reed has his doubts as well, suspecting that Mia isn't ready to be back on assignment. As the investigation proceeds and the two divulge their troubled pasts, they find themselves warming to each other—just in time for Mia to become the next target for the flame-happy madman. Rose's characters aren't exactly fresh—she's the tough-but-vulnerable cop's daughter, he's the gruff-but-lovable heavy—but Rose gives them plenty of room to develop as the tense procedural escalates. Emotional subplots, engaging secondary characters and a string of red herrings will keep readers hooked. (Feb.)

    A reviewer

I could not put this book down. Even though it was quite lengthy with 550 pages, there wasn't a single page wasted with unnecessary rambling. Count to ten truly had me on the edge of my seat. This was my second Karen Rose novel, the first being Die for me. When I read Die for me I was wanting romantic suspense...after all that's what it says on the books' spine....though I found little romance in that particular book. When I picked up Count to ten, I did so intending just to read a good suspense novel and I was pleasantly surprised that the romance with this book was close to being on equal footing with the suspense. Karen Rose is brilliant. I wasn't even finished with this book when I came to the B&N website and ordered 5 more K. Rose books.

    Gory

For a romance novel I found this book to gory for me. A good writer does not need to dwell on gore to make a good book. Disappoining read.

A wonderful mix of suspense and romance

A fast paced mystery that brings out every emotion in you as things unfold. I even sympathized with the killer. It's also an eye opener to what goes on with the foster kids in our not-so-perfect-system.

    Count To Ten Rocks

Count To Ten By Karen Rose will keep you on the edge of your seat till the very last page. Detective Mia Mitchell is back to work after being shot in the line of duty. She is still reeling from her partner Abe Reagan being seriously injured in the same shooting. On Mia¿s first day back she is temporarily assigned to work with Lt. Reed Solliday of the fire department. Seems some one is killing people then setting fire to their homes. Reed and Mia form a partnership to bring down a killer but Mia finds her self attracted to Reed like no other man before. Reed Solliday isn¿t used to a partner like Mia, besides being aggressive and tough as nails, she is a knockout. Reed wasn¿t planning on having romantic thoughts when he agreed to work with the police department. As the killer targets grow daily, Reed and Mia rush to figure out who is next on the list. When the danger strikes close to them both, it makes them realize what they have found as a couple is worth fighting for. Karen Rose is a force to be reckoned with in the field of romantic suspense. The tension is riveting, each page brings the terror to a fever pitch. The romance between Reed and Mia is as compelling and moving as any book out there. You feel like you know these people and can feel their joy and their sorrow. Another Karen Rose book cannot come out soon enough for this reader. Kudos

    'Count To Ten' is HOT

This is a fast-paced novel with great suspense, and the right balance of romance. The characters jump off the page and you will find yourself rooting for Mia -that she will find the killer, and hoping her pain will begin to heal.
