Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Piggy Wiggy is making a special birthday surprise for his favorite teddy bear. Can you guess what it is? As young readers turn each brightly colored page and read each clue they will slowly discover the delicious dessert Piggy Wiggy is baking. This adorable book has appealing illustrations and will help children learn their numbers one through ten. In addition, many children will understand Piggy Wiggy's desire to make a surprise treat for his very special teddy bear, as many children have "lovies" of their own. From the very first page, where Piggy Wiggy begins with his one big mixing bowl to the very last, where he places the ten bright candles on top, children will thoroughly delight in this book. Constructed of heavy duty cardboard, this book will also put up with quite a beating from little ones and can even endure a teething infant or two without showing too much wear and tear. 2001, Handprint Books, $5.95. Ages 3 to 5. Reviewer: Emily Cook

PreS-These boldly colored board books feature PiggyWiggy and his teddy bear. Large-format pages show an endearing young piglet, drawn with a wobbly line and filled with bright color. In Count to Ten, PiggyWiggy bakes a cake for Teddy's birthday. One side of the double-page spread shows him assembling his cake (four eggs, five pats of butter, etc.); the other side shows Teddy hiding, observing every step of the surprise. In What Color Is That, PiggyWiggy dresses up to make his toy laugh. Each piece of clothing, from orange suspenders to a polka-dot purple tie, will have kids guessing what he will be-a clown-while Teddy manages to entangle himself in PiggyWiggy's clothes. The illustrations are large enough to use in storytimes. Clever and fun for the toddler crowd.-Sally Bates Goodroe, formerly at Harris County Public Library, Houston, TX Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
