Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
Children can count their way from one (yao) to ten (lahs) in Pashto, one of the two languages of Afghanistan. The paintings in warm, muted tones of brown, yellow, and blue accompany the simple text that takes readers on a virtual tour of Afghan culture. Included are the Blue Mosque, the most famous for Islamic worship, women wearing burkas, handmade wool rugs in the market, and kites used in the sport of kite fighting. Arabic numerals and a pronunciation guide help make this accessible to young children. This is a fine introduction to modern Afghanistan and is part of a series that includes Iran, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
