COUNTDOWN “Til DADDY comes home written by Kristin Ayyar tells the story of a little boy who is anxiously awaiting his father’s return home from a trip. If you’re looking for a book that discusses family traditions, love and incorporates ways to lessen your child’s separation from their parent or parents then step right up this book is definitely for you. This is an adorable story for both boys and girls with colorful illustrations and easy to read pages. I would recommend this book to all of my military moms who have small children dealing with the ups and downs of separation due to their military parent being deployed

We loved this book! We are a military family with numerous deployments under our belt. Deployments are especially hard for little ones since they do not really understand why their mom/dad have to leave and the concept of time is still very foreign to them. This book not only gives great ideas on how to implement rituals to stay connected but also how to help children cope. Great book for any family that endures separation!

In the short time we have owned Kristin Ayyar's book, it has become a treasure to both my 6 year old and my 9 year old. As such, it was fascinating to watch how intent and focused they were as I turned each page. They had an immediate connection to the young boy. As a Coast Guard family, our children cope with much separation and travel. I am thankful that they have this insightful book to relate to their longings and feelings. I am certain that children in all walks of life will be able to connect with this wonderful story.

I love children's books and have a special affection for books that help military kids.  I immediately loved the look of this book; the illustrations are just precious and perfect for your youngest kids.  Kudos to illustrator Melissa Bailey for creating such a sweet portrait of family and togetherness. The story itself is both realistic for kids whose parents must travel for extended periods of time and positive in how those challenges are portrayed.  It focuses on encouragement and solutions, which I absolutely love.  It contains a variety of concrete ideas for families to implement to make separations a little easier. "During our countdown, Nana visits more and we plan cool things to make the time go by faster." One huge plus for this book is that it relates to all children who have a dad who travels.  It's equally applicable to military families as well as families who experience business-related travel.   Another bonus is the list of Discussion Questions at the end of the book which allows anyone reading the book to talk with a child about how the separation might be affecting them.  Another favorite is the clever addition of "Four Ways to Countdown" ideas for helping kids cope with the time their parent will be away. The book is geared for younger children but is a great addition to any family's library, especially those who have business travel, military or otherwise, in their future.

Countdown 'til Daddy Comes Home is one of the sweetest written and illistrated books for children who's daddy's travel or deploy for their jobs. The Author Kristin Ayyar, a fellow Military Wife, worded the book perfectly to hit both Civilian Children AND Military Kiddos! Throughout the story the little boy expresses his desire to see his daddy, how he wishes he could have fit in his suitcase or the care package they send to him, and how much he misses him. I love how the little boy says and does many of the same things I have seen my own son go through during deployments, long trainings and the long distance relationship he has with his own father. The story shares the feelings that the little boy has as well as different ways that he and the family come together to make the time pass as quickly as possible. The ideas that help him and the family stay connected with daddy while he is away are wonderful, a few of which I have done with my oldest and many new ideas that the baby, man-child and I will do together during the next deployment or long training exercise. Going through deployments with children is tough, not only for the parent left stateside to run the home and family, but for the child/children who cannot always grasp the concept of not being able to see or talk to daddy as they normally would if he were coming home nightly. Countdown 'til Daddy Comes Home goes through an entire out of country business trip (deployment) of the little boy's daddy to his homecoming and the ways he, his older sister and mommy prepare for his arrival. The end of the story has a section dedicated to discussion questions to cover with your child before & during a deployment as well as preparing for daddy's homecoming. A great way to help your kiddo through the deployment that he/she too is greatly affected by. The very end has different fun and sweet ideas on how you and your child/children can countdown together. I recently found out (yesterday) that the First Lady of the Marine Corps has established a recommended reading list for Wives as well as Children... I hope to see this book on there soon, it is definitely one that young military children can relate to and enjoy while daddy is away, and one that mommy's can use as a guide to help the children through it.

The first thing I noticed about the book was the wonderful, bright and large illustrations. My son loves books and he loves looking at the pictures and noticing all the the little things about them and this book has perfect pictures for that! I also love that this book is not only written to help military families, but also for families who have a daddy who may have to travel a lot. The story starts from a little boy’s perspective of how his daddy is getting ready to leave. I love how it goes through the tough feelings, but also talks about ways to deal with them. It continues through giving ideas of what the little boy did to keep in touch with his daddy and to keep the relationship going. At the end of the story, it covers getting ready for daddy’s homecoming, and all the preparations that come during that time. Then after daddy gets home it shows the little boy getting one-on-one time with his dad. This book is perfect for children during deployments because it covers every phase of the deployment. It prepares them for what to expect and gives them solutions of what they can do to stay close to their daddy even though he is far apart from them. At the end of the book there are discussion questions that will lead you to talk to your child about the upcoming deployment and for during the deployment. There is also a section for other ways to help countdown the days until daddy comes home. I love this book and recommend it for every military child! I can’t wait to use it for my son next time his daddy deploys.

What an amazing way to help children deal with the reality that a parent has to leave for awhile in order to do their job. Being a military wife myself, with a spouse deployed, it is sometimes a struggle to ensure my children understand that daddy will return home soon. This book offers wonderful ideas that help children countdown those days until their loved one returns home. Definitely a must for any military family.
