Countdown to a New Library: Managing the Building Project

by Jeannette Woodward

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Heather Pittman
This reference guide offers detailed information about managing the building or renovation of a library from a head librarian's perspective. Guidelines are given for every aspect, starting with hiring architects and selecting contractors. Woodward offers many suggestions for handling the design process and surviving construction and even provides helpful hints for moving into your new space. Plenty of information about the building trades is offered, such as an introduction to basic jargon, as well as specific facts about ADA compliance and LEED certification rules. Each chapter also contains sidebars called "Tips or Tales" that offer anecdotal stories about library construction. Having lived through a library renovation, this reviewer is certain that it would have been much easier with this book. Woodward gives excellent information for every step of the process. Many of her suggestions deal with the technical aspects of design and building, but she also delves into the personal realm, for example, the adversarial relationship that can arise between architect and librarian and how to avoid such problems. "Tips and Tales" provide real-life examples of what to do or not do and why. This book is a necessary read for anyone considering construction or renovation of a library. Reviewer: Heather Pittman
