Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Pat Trattles
Say the word "forensics" and what often comes to mind is solving violent crimes such as assault or murder. But did you know that forensics can also be used to identify counterfeit goods? Part of the "Solve That Crime!" series from Enslow Publishers, this book shows how forensic science can be used to spot fakes and fraud, and put counterfeiters behind bars. Written in easy to understand language with each subtopic covered in a few short paragraphs accompanied by information-packed sidebars, it is ideal for the reluctant reader. Only forty-eight pages long, it talks about the different types of forgeries, including paper money and coins, CD's, DVD's, paintings and other art forms; how to spot forgeries; how some counterfeiters have created fake ancient artifacts in an attempt to rewrite history; and finally, covers the training required to specialize in a forensics career dealing with uncovering fakes and forgeries. The layout is very appealing with its use of color-coded sidebars to present supplemental information. Of particular interest are "True Crime" sidebars which highlight actual cases in which counterfeiters were identified and foiled, and "Examine the Evidence" sidebars in which readers are asked to perform their own forensic experiments. Full color photographs accompany the text. Also included is a comprehensive table of contents and index, glossary, and suggestions for further reading both on the internet and in print. It all adds up to a quality product and a welcome addition to library shelves. Reviewer: Pat Trattles

Gr 5-9–These books offer a variety of topics dealing with forensic science and include more than just body and blood evidence. Each title boasts in-depth information, sidebars detailing events of true crime, and activities that will increase understanding. Two of the most interesting titles are Virtual Crime! and Counterfeit! However, there is a great deal of repetition, particularly in the Ballard titles. Photographs are colorful, well-captioned, and related to the text, and include no bloody bodies.
