Overview

Countermeasure is The TBR Pile's 2012 Book of the Year.

COUNTERMEASURE is a recipient of the indiePENdents's Seal of Good Writing.

WARNING: Contains scenes of mature subject matter, graphic situations and language. Reader discretion is advised.

The suspense driven COUNTERMEASURE SERIES combines full-length novels and Bytes of Life short stories about sexy, technologically inclined men and women. The series is filled with heart-stopping danger and enough twists and turns to make a hair-raising rollercoaster seem tame. In the series, Trevor Bauer, a tough as nails NSA geek, and his even more tenacious love interest, Cassandra James, are on a quest for clues in the mysterious disappearance of Trevor's parents. Joined by fate, their search drops them into the mysterious and violent world of data espionage, one that tests their love as they sweep the world with romance, sex, and ingenuity to find answers that will have the power to change their lives forever.

In the first novel of the COUNTERMEASURE SERIES, Trevor Bauer, an NSA analyst, is searching for answers to the mystery surrounding his parents' disappearance when he crosses paths with Cassandra James, an ex-CIA operative with a big chip on her shoulder. By a stroke of luck, he becomes the key to her own mission while she becomes the center of his attention.

Fighting an attraction as intense as their overwhelming instinct to keep each other at bay, together, they embark on a harrowing adventure that leads them across the ocean and into a world of intrigue and danger they had never foreseen. When faced with death defying choices, will they learn to trust their own instincts and each other to survive?

Must Read by Book Addict - 5 Stars

"Always searching for a new, grab you by the collar and drag you along for the ride series, I was not disappointed when I stumbled across Countermeasure...I had to walk away several times because the characters are so well written you become emotionally involved with them. They kept me guessing up until the end and then left us hanging in anticipation for the second book in this series."

Countermeasure: A Smart, Sexy Start to the Series by Jamey Rodgers - 5 Stars

"The first book in the highly-anticipated Countermeasure series does not disappoint...The dialogue is intelligent and witty, the action is authentic and well-paced, and the romance is hot...Countermeasure leaves the reader deeply satisfied, but also hungry for the next adventure."

Countermeasure Rocks the 5-star category by Mrs. Condit Reads - 5 Stars

"I laughed at the funny repartee among the characters. I cried at their losses. I cringed when they witnessed gruesome horrors. I cowered when they were chased by truly awful bad guys. And I was aroused when they made love. Mr. Almeida and Ms. Aubrey had me from the first paragraph. I could not put this book down, reading non-stop at home, on the treadmill at the gym, and staying up all hours to see how things turned out... The authors are very adept at description and dialog, bringing the reader into the story powerfully... I can hardly wait for FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, book 2 in the COUNTERMEASURES series, promised at the end of book 1. Bring it on, Mr. Almeida and Ms. Aubrey! Just... bring it."

Micki's Bounce on Books - 5 bounces

"What a better way to come back after the holidays than to review a really awesome book. A story of betrayal, survival and love with the luck of the Irish. This story is engaging and the characters are as approachable as your best friends."

Countermeasure will have you mesmerized from page one with its dangerous storyline and brilliantly developed characters. The elements of danger and murderous intent, combined with a slow and methodically developing romance come together to make Countermeasure a must-read novel for romance fans who love a fast-paced thriller. I highly recommend Countermeasure for any fan of a fast paced erotic romance. I know I'm looking forward to checking out the duo's next collaboration!
Becky Condit
This is a plot-driven novel with well-developed characters. We begin with a mysterious death at sea and the book ends with that particular mystery yet unsolved. In between, a set of files concerning a new drug is stolen, presumably to be sold to the highest bidder among competing pharmaceutical houses. The stakes are high, with billions of dollars in sales needed to offset the high price of research.
Candy Chapman
Cassandra James, an ex CIA agent and now a security specialist at her father's firm, is assigned the task of guarding a new pharmaceutical trial for a client. When those files are stolen right out from under her, Cassandra takes it personally. After doing some investigating, Cassandra comes across information that leads her to Trevor Bauer, a NSA geek. Immediately, the sparks fly between the two as they set out to get back the stolen files. Filled with tons of suspense, action, and romance...

Chris Almeida began writing children's stories at a very young age. While Cecilia Aubrey has dabbled in writing on and off over the years. Together, they write suspense-driven erotic romance with sexy, technologically inclined men and woman, filled with intrigue and enough twists and turns to make a rollercoaster seem tame.
Chris and Cecilia have several published short stories to their credit and their first novel, COUNTERMEASURE, was published in January 2011. This book… There is no word that can describe how much I enjoyed reading it! I felt like I was one of the characters. I felt what they felt. In my opinion, a book can be considered weel-written and great when you can feel your pulse quicken when things are getting hot and heavy between the characters, when you can feel a pain in your heart when something bad is happening to them, when you feel your heart break thinking they won’t be able to be together, when you smile and beam when finally, you know everything is gonna be alright. Thanks to this book, you feel like you could meet the character in real life (you hope people like that exist!) and you know you would become friends with them. Cassie is a strong and independent woman. Trevor is a sweet, strong-minded geek, sexy and most importantly Irish (ahaha, that the best part!;)) This book has everything to be perfect. Romance, Action, Mystery, Love, Friendship, Betrayal… And we have to admit that the sex part is just as great… if not more! (No, I’m not blushing…:D) I felt like there was some kind of parallel between the chase for the truth, and the chase for love. It was perfect. I know I will dream of this story for a long time, and I can’t wait to read every other book of this serie! Thank you to the authors, you did a great job at making us dream and smile. Your book is the reason why I love reading so much. Because sometimes, we come across a treasure, and your book is definitely one. Megan.

This book series is very well written. There are explicit sex scenes (even though tastefully done), so not for the young readers. The characters are real, the writing is interesting and the action was fun. There are a few areas where you're reading (part of a non-reality) movie action scene, but all in all, the book was good. There are two story lines going and both will fall into place and give you a great ending. Each book in the series will lead you into the next. I have not read the third book yet, as I don't believe it's out until July 2013 (but I could be wrong). I highly recommend this book if you like intrigue, action, and romance.

Reviewed by Ellen Hogan for Readers Favorite Cassie's father's security company was picked to safeguard a new drug at Bristol Pharmaceutical company. Just when Cassie thinks all was secure, the information is stolen by an employee of Bristol. She is removed from the case but continued to ponder on the crime. Cassie met Trevor Bauer who worked for the NSA and asked his help in finding Allison, the girl that stole the information. They head for France and find her but she is murdered after calling Trevor to tell him she will turn over the information. Cassie and Trevor search for the killer. Cassie and Trevor draw closer together despite the fact that neither planned nor wanted to fall in love. They both have to deal with ghosts from their past in order to forge a future together. This book with non-stop action takes the reader on an exciting journey from California to France and on to Monte Carlo. Murder, espionage and romance keep the reader eagerly turning pages. I enjoyed watching the romance between Cassie and Trevor develop. Readers will be pleased with this new series.

Let me begin with a small notice that was given by the authors (and copied from the Amazon site) “The Countermeasure Series also has a tie-in series called Countermeasure: Bytes of Life. This new series of shorts gives the readers glimpses into the day-to-day life of the Countermeasure characters. Although the shorts are standalone stories, they are character-driven, NOT plot-driven. Please be advised that ALL short stories in the spin-off series contain EROTIC content. They are NOT recommended for younger audience. Some of the events that take place in the short stories might be referenced in the novels and vice-versa. It is strongly advised that you read the novels and shorts in chronological order.” I received an electronic copy of this novel from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility. This was a fast paced novel, tasting the worlds of corporate espionage, national security concerns, action, internet technology and murder all wrapped up in a very character driven story of finding oneself and love in trying circumstances. We meet Cassandra, ex-CIA agent, daughter of a widowed Navy SEAL and fraught with doubts about her inability to ‘be good enough’ all while denying and controlling the emotions that assail her. We meet Trevor, Irish born son of two parents lost at sea, a geek extraordinaire, working for the NSA in the super-secret division that listens in and flags conversations and contacts that contain specific keywords that could damage the security of the United States. Each character is detailed and defined with painstaking precision. I actually felt Cassandra cringe under her father’s scrutiny and harsh words. Trevor is as beautifully detailed, with the inclusion of a touch of Gaelic that is so neatly incorporated you can hear the words sing in your ear. When the authors state that this story is character and not plot driven, they are not joking. Delving deeper into the reveal of each character is like finding a new puzzle piece that was long missing: you may not know what isn’t revealed until it is in place: and then it all makes sense. As a romance it works, although there are times when you want to shake them both and make them listen to their hearts, without being so afraid of ‘what may come’. The sex is hot: knee quivering, satisfyingly appealing to both a man’s and a woman’s point of view – and told in both voices. While the real erotic and sexy bits are more toward the end, the emotional foreplay and sense of electric connection between Cassandra and Trevor is palpable. This is one of those books that you read it for the characters, are entertained and learn bits about security and technology from the action, and are revelling in the sexual tension from the moment Cassandra and Trevor meet. This is one of those satisfying books with an ending that will satisfy every reader, and has an open view to more. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

Countermeasure is the first book in a series with the same name. The authors Chris Almeida, Cecilia Aubrey have done an amazing job with their characters and settings. In the first book we meet the main characters Cassandra and Trevor. Cassandra is an ex CIA agent and Trevor a NSA geek. What more can you want from such combination? In almost every book I've read the female lead is almost always depending on the male lead and he is represented as a hulky, strong man, with desire to protect and fight 'till the end for his female. But here the picture is quite different. Of course our characters learn to care for each other and protect the other, but here the male is not the typical strong over-muscled guy ready to enter the fight even with bare hands if he has too. Here our female is strong and willing to face danger. She is an ex CIA agent now working for her father's security firm. After an important data disappears on her watch and she is removed from the project she decides to track down the missing files. You might ask how Trevor fits in the picture. As he works for NSA he searches for clues about his parent's disappearance. Fate brings Cassandra and Trevor working together to find the missing files. Both embark on a journey to find the missing file. On this journey they are bound to learn to trust each other, learn more about the other and discover something that might be enough of a reason for them to stay together. The characters created by the author are so well-formed that while I was reading I had a feeling that they are real. The places they visited were very well described, too. There were many moments when I believed that if i visit all of the places form the book I might just meet Cassandra and Trevor. This is an amazing book from amazing series. I recommend it to everyone who wants a good read. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

This delightful book gets off to a bit of a slow start as the background of the characters is revealed, something I normally dislike. But this was very well done, and in the context of the current action. Plus, knowing their history and motivation is vital in this thrilling book.  Cassandra has a near compulsive need to impress her father. Trevor has his own issues with his missing parents. Neither one wants the distraction of the other. Sparks fly when the two of them have to cooperate.  I can't say enough great things about this steaming hot spy mystery. It is one of the rare books I couldn't put down. Well, until I was so exhausted as dawn approached and I dropped it on my face. The characters are beautifully crafted with consistent actions and reactions that make them seem so real. The plot builds at a good pace with enough jolts to keep you on your toes and a nerve-wracking final confrontation.  Everything gets neatly tied up in the end.  This is a fantastic weekend read. A weekend when you don't have anything else to do because you won't be able to set it aside.

I really enjoyed this read. What I loved most is from the beginning you know something is going on and you're on the edge of your seat wanting to know what it is. Another element that I found imperative for the story was the story being told from different view points. Countermeasure is not a light, fluffy read. This book is for the serious reader that wants to curl up in a chair and read without being disturbed. I highly recommend it!

Sexy & exciting! I was completely sucked in to the mystery and intrigue of the story. Cassandra (Cassie) is a strong, intelligent woman who is not looking for love and is looking for her father’s approval. She is ex-CIA agent and was injured on the job, which made her rethink her future. She knows there was a traitor at the CIA but that story is never followed. She is assigned a security job by her father for a new drug and while on the job, the formula is stolen. Cassandra does not give up and enlists her ex-partner Nathan to help her find the information. Nathan, through the story, is a distraction, both to Cassandra and Trevor and to the story. He acts like the jilted suitor and unless he turns up in following stories, seems unnecessary.  After Cassandra is thrown off the team her father gave her, is where the story really gets interesting and involved. The trail leads to NSA analyst Trevor Bauer, who has secrets of his own. They embark on a trip that leads to Italy, France and finally Monaco. Along the way, they both discover things about each other and themselves. It is a love story for all time. They also have to avoid the bad guys and figure out “who done it” and why.  My only complaints about the story are Nathan and also Trevor’s back story. It is alluded to many times and leaves you hanging and confused and seems out of place. It is just a small bump, though, on a marvellous, exciting and sexy tale. I would definitely like to read further stories, hopefully to clear up the Nathan issue and also to find out what happened to Trevor’s parents. This book has been on my radar for a long time but I never acted on it until recently. Now I am kicking myself because I know what I was missing and I have to play catch-up on the series. A real hardship to read one book after another, right? Ha. If you like romantic suspense stories that can get your heart pumping during action scenes but also racing during the passionate love scenes, this book is for you. Countermeasure by Chris Almeida and Cecilia Aubrey is different than the drug lord, military type romantic suspense books I have read. It has more intrigue in it and I really like the balance of romance and suspense. Countermeasure was a little slow in the beginning to me while it set the stage for the characters of Trevor Bauer and Cassandra James. However, after finishing the book I understand why that background was needed. Trevor and Cassandra live on opposite sides of the country and I couldn’t figure out how they were going to meet one another. The background provided early in the story made it all worthwhile. When Trevor and Cassandra do meet for the first time, the book takes off at a fast pace and does not leave you with a lot of time to get to know the characters’ backgrounds and explain why they react certain ways to things. I started the book with the prequel titled Uncharted, where we get to meet Trevor’s parents before they set sail. That pulled me into the overall plot immediately and I can’t wait to find out how that ends. I am curious to know if Chris and Cecilia know how it is going to end or if they are keeping it open. The main plot of Countermeasure is engaging. I have yet to read about anything thing like this so it was interesting to read and had me curious. Cassandra works for her father at a security agency and is hired to protect the formula for a new drug that is being produced. Trevor works for the NSA but is also searching for his parents that have been missing for years. They are each different than the typical hero and heroine you read in romance books and I think that uniqueness allows the reader to relate to them on a personal level. Their jobs and intelligence, however, are a little intimidating but that makes it fun to watch them interact with one another. The adventure that Cassandra and Trevor find themselves on is unexpected. With Trevor’s tech skills and link back to his friend George at the NSA and Cassandra’s experience as an ex-CIA operative, they manage to retrieve what they set out for, and escape death a couple of times. Chris and Cecilia’s writing makes me feel as though I was part of the story. I wasn’t just reading about characters, I was feeling the same emotions they were and felt like I was helping them solve the puzzles (so what if my talking to them out loud didn’t change the actual story). My heart was racing in several scenes and I felt like I couldn’t put down the book or I would be leaving them in that situation. I had to get past it first. In addition to the adrenaline filled action scenes, the intimate scenes between Trevor and Cassandra were very nicely done. I thought they fit the characters appropriately for that time in the story and based on how long they had known each other. It was a nice release (no pun intended) and break from them being on the run. Countermeasure is an engaging adventure full of intrigue and suspense as well as heart warming passion. I highly recommend you give this series a try. You will be hooked and so glad you did.

This book sets course the beginning of the series perfectly. Conor and Maeve love resembles that of their son Trevor and his wife Cassandra. I am happy Uncharted is combined that way it flows and you get the understanding of the journey that was started in Countermeasure. Cassandra was drawn to this smart mouth agent and not only did his interest draw the LOVE of his life but also problems and solutions that will provide closure.....eventually. The journey begins..... steamy and passport required

This book was the perfect blend of romance, adventure, and mystery. I was hooked from the start. It was fast paced but not rushed and was very interesting from start to finish. I thought the character development was outstanding. I love a strong, intelligent female character and Cassandra was all that and more. Trevor was her perfect complement. Each had their vulnerabilities and each was extremely believable and likeable. They worked well together and I enjoyed the way their relationship developed. The plot was easy to follow. There were plenty of twists to keep the reader interested and curiosity peaked. I liked that the romance did not overpower the suspense/mystery but was a complement to it. The story was masterfully woven and kept me from wanting to put it down. I had to find out what happened next. The ending was satisfying and one of the best I have read for leading into the next book in the series. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in an intriguing storyline independent yet complementary of the overall theme of the series. I liked that it was written as collaboration. The authors did an awesome job. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series.

5 Stars for the story. 4 Stars for the audio version. Trevor Bauer, an NSA analyst, is still haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his parents, nearly four years ago. However one case of corporate espionage at a pharmaceutical company, will change Trevor's life. Through a stroke of luck, Trevor finds himself in the middle of Cassandra James's path. Cassandra James, an ex-CIA operative, has just been taken off her very first case at her father's company. But that isn't about to stop Cassandra, so she teams up with Trevor and the two of them must overcome their pasts in order to catch the culprit. Countermeasure is jam-packed with intrigue and suspense, mixed with steamy chemistry. Chris Almeida and Cecilia Aubrey have given geeks everywhere an exciting romance to read. Cassandra is a strong, determined woman, while Trevor is an extremely hot computer genius. The technical jargon that is mixed in throughout the book is evenly balanced between the witty banter of the two main characters. The story and characters iswonderful. Mature fans of romantic suspense need to mark this book as a must-read. This book was excellent and I cannot wait to read the next in the series.
