Overview

Counter-Terrorism: A Reference Handbook outlines the threat of terrorism and ways to combat it. Written by two expert insiders in the field, this extensive examination surveys a wide range of diverse terrorist groups from the Provisional Irish Republican Army PIRA to Al Qaeda. It shows how key trends and patterns in domestic and international terrorism such as suicide bombings require counter strategies and tactics including surveillance and reconnaissance.

Case studies of terrorist organizations in Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Balkans, and the Caucasus, and profiles of terrorists like Khalid Sheikh Mohommad, alias Mokhtar The Brain, who masterminded the Al Qaeda attack on 9/11, illustrate the growing network of groups and leaders harnessing the forces of globalization. Finally, the authors suggest lthat no single state can act effectively on its own to confront terrorism—instead, a wide range of strategies needs to be adopted by all.

Library Journal
A collection of essays followed by a chronology of events, a directory of organizations, NGOs, and think tanks. Like any good reference title, it contains a bibliography of print and nonprint sources. It could be used for both quick fact checking and more in-depth research, which makes it a perfect reference source. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up-Each of these titles addresses an important topic of interest and concern to Americans today. In both, the first chapter sets a historical or global context. In Patriot, it is a short but useful descriptive introduction; in Counterterrorism, unfortunately, it is more partisan and politically prescriptive. Remaining narrative chapters in Patriot discuss the passage of the bill, provide a legal analysis of the legislation, describe critics' concerns, and consider the response of the Bush Administration. Counterterrorism deals with moral and legal issues inherent in the effort, the media, and effective reactions to terrorism. In both titles, profiles of key players and reprints of relevant documents are included. Finally, each book contains a detailed descriptive directory of organizations and agencies connected to these topics, an annotated listing of sources print and electronic, and a chronology of related events. The writing is clear and accessible and offers more information than comparable series titles.-Jack Forman, Mesa College Library, San Diego Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
