Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In this companion to A Is for Animals, Counting Creatures: Pop-Up Animals From 1 to 100 by David Pelham, working with his daughter Sophie, goes from one to 20, then counts to 100 by tens. The animals pop up from behind colorful, numbered flaps-two per page-in alliterative matches, such as 16 spiders and 40 finches (a cautionary note to parents at bedtime: children may insist upon counting all 80 aphids). Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
To make learning to count fun, Sophie and David Pelham have designed a book that will challenge those learning to count to one hundred. The first pages start out very simply with the numbers from one to twenty. Each number is boldly printed on a bright, shiny square that serves as a flap. Once opened, up pops a picture with the requisite number of creatures. Some require sharp eyes to count the birds, fireflies, spiders and more. After twenty, the count goes up by tens to one hundred. It will be pretty challenging to count sixty seagulls and even more so to count eighty aphids. The final flap reveals one hundred people with great diversity so each child should be able to identify with someone in the picture. Since the book is a pop-up it is probably best suited as a personal purchase or something that a classroom teacher may give a student during quiet time. 2004, Little Simon, Ages 3 to 7.
