Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Counting books are always popular. Combine counting and sea life and you have an attractive book for very young and nonreaders. Beginning with one whale and continuing through ten gills on a stingray, this book, part of the "Counting in the Biomes" series, introduces ocean critters and their habitats. Photo illustrations are clear and colorful with numbers that are easy to spot. Simple text tells about each counted critter. Especially interesting are the facts that crabs are too heavy to swim, so they walk on the sandy beach or ocean bottom; starfish can break in two and grow into two separate starfish; and scallops swim by snapping their shells and shooting through the water. The authors include an introduction, definition of a biome, and an explanation of what makes up the ocean—the world's biggest biome. They end with more facts for teachers and parents to share as well as a simple index, "Words to Know," and a list of books and Internet addresses. Hands-on learning after reading this book together could be creating an ocean biome with plastic critters, sand, etc., or creating one on paper with a class mural. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
