Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Hazel Buys
In a different approach to learning the first ten numbers, the reader explores a taiga and the animals and plants that live there. A taiga is a biome, explained in the opening pages along with basic vocabulary words. Numbers one through ten are presented on individual two-page spreads with the featured number representing word, numeral, and in bright color photographs of animals or animal parts, e.g., beaver toes. The featured number is highlighted in yellow. Brief paragraphs provide additional information about the animal's habitat, characteristics, and life cycle. The text is set off in blocks of white with a contrasting border and introduced by the large font is the brightly colored question "How Many …?" This book is one in the "Counting in the Biomes" series designed to teach and/or strengthen counting skills while also teaching science facts. It concludes with "More Information on the Taiga," a review of counting one to ten "Count Again!" "Words to Know," "Learn More," a list of related books and Internet addresses, and an index. It would be a good counting and science resource book for a preschool classroom or elementary school classroom or library. Reviewer: Hazel Buys
