Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Before the counting adventure in both the alpine and arctic tundras begins, the biome is briefly described and located on a world map. Then, in the count, the different plants and animals from the tundra are featured and described. Starting the count at one is the arctic fox with its one nose and a keen sense of smell. The full-page, color photographs are found throughout the counting in the tundra. After the count of ten, tufted puffins that live along the arctic waters, there is more information about the characteristics of the tundra followed by a photo summary of the count, a glossary, and an index. Some readers may need additional support with content vocabulary and inferences about how each animal's features help in its survival in the tundra. Guidance may also be needed to understand the structure and format of informational text. Readers wishing to learn more about this biome will find a few additional books listed in the back, along with internet sites. Those explorers interested in other biomes may find other books in this series, "Counting in the Biomes," helpful. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung

This series combines a concept book with descriptive information and excellent photographs of flora and fauna in a specific biome. However, a few flaws detract from these presentations. Each book has a wonderful map with colors identifying the types of biomes throughout the world. Unfortunately, the key for each book only identifies the featured biome, e.g., in Tundra, red represents those areas of the world, but there's no key as to what the other colors mean. Also, the numbers are printed on the animals, so there's no challenge to the counting. The full-color photographs are superb. There are unusual as well as common animals and nature features. The concluding "Count Again" section has no real function. All of the numbers and their written form are listed, but the corresponding pictures are abbreviated versions of the full-page photographs and don't always include the correct number of objects. This is inappropriate for a counting book for young children. These titles have a laudable purpose, but the execution is lacking.-Erlene Bishop Killeen, Stroughton Area School District, WI
