Here is an adorable book that would make a thoughtful gift for new parents or new grandparents. Although Baby may be crying as the story begins, there is a sense of peace and joy throughout. The precious little round-faced baby is tired, so Mommy dries those tears with kisses. First there are "ten little kisses on teeny tiny toes." Daddy, Sister, Grandma and even the cat and the dog kiss Baby as the countdown proceeds. The descriptions are apt, as when the dog gives "six tickly kisses on baby's dimpled chin" and the cat licks "three fuzzy kisses on sweet little ears." Finally Mommy gives one kiss on a "sleepy, dreamy head" and then, of course, it's time for bed. Every person and creature pictured is appealing and the story captures the feeling of the unconditional love that family members feel for a new baby. A fussy baby receives "ten little kisses on teeny tiny toes/nine laughing kisses on busy, wriggly feet/eight squishy kisses on chubby, yummy knees," and so on down to "one last kiss on your sleepy, dreamy head." Each member of the family takes a turn bestowing kisses on the child: mom, dad, grandma, big sister, and even the dog and cat. Katz uses bold colors and lines to accent the flat, yet expressive illustrations. Heavy use of pink, combined with an array of brightly colored patterns, adds to the tender, happy tone of the story. Collage pieces are seamlessly woven into the gouache and colored-pencil illustrations, and Katz throws in some surprising perspectives, such as the mother kissing the baby's toes shown from the infant's point of view. The final spread, which shows the whole family smiling down at the sleeping child in her crib, epitomizes the loving warmth of this pitch-perfect bedtime story. Biography

From painting and sculpture to quiltmaking and costume design, Karen Katz has been making art in one form or another all her life. But it was not until she and her husband adopted a baby from Guatemala that she considered a career in children's books. Published in 1997, her debut picture book, Over the Moon, told the story of one adoptive family's happy beginnings in a country far away. Since then, Katz has gone on to create many award-winning picture, board, and novelty books that capture the joys of childhood in simple storylines, vibrant colors, and winsome illustrations. Some include count-down elements (Counting Kisses, Ten Tiny Tickles) or interactive features (Where Is Baby's Belly Button?, Peek-A-Baby); still others introduce holiday traditions (My First Kwanzaa, My First Chinese New Year) or reinforce good habits, manners, or behavior (Excuse Me!, No Biting!, I Can Share).

Perhaps the secret to Katz's success (besides the undeniable appeal of her signature round-headed babies!) can be summed up in this quote taken directly from the author/artist's website: "When an idea for a story pops into my head, I ask these questions: Will a child want to read this book? Good To Know

Katz explains the difference between designing picture books and board books in this way:
Picture books usually have more words in them but they tell more of a narrative story. Board books are usually simpler. They are generally 6 spreads and are about one concept. When I create a board book, I try to make something that is very interactive for the baby, with flaps and pull tabs and lots of surprises. Board books are a perfect size for a baby's hand to hold and touch. Babies can have an experience all by them selves with a good board book and can also have a good lap-time experience with a mommy or daddy or caregiver. Picture books take a little more care since the pages can rip. With a board book, you can throw it in a stroller, chew on the corners and even wipe off mashed peas.

      Excellent addition to first books collection.

      At a recent baby shower, attendees were asked to give a signed child's book instead of a card. I selected this excellent book. Very engaging and early age appropriate....and who doesn't want more "baby kisses"?

      Nice book to read to young children

      I liked the book but my two year old grandson was not really into the book. I think it is a great book for a younger chid. Although he is
      big on giving kisses this book did not seem to interest him. I am adding
      the book to my children's book library for future gradchildren. Hopefully
      younger ones will like it. Not sorry that I purchased it.

      Counting Kisses by Karen Katz

      I bought this book for my 2-year-old granddaughter. She loves this book and giggles every time she gets kisses. This book is a favorite and gets read over and over.

      A great book for interacting with your child!

      We bought this for our daughter when she was six months and she giggled throughout the book. Now she is 16 months and she brings us the book and sits down just waiting for her kisses. It helps them learn the parts of the body and you don't have to chase them down for kisses ... believe me ... they expect them and love every minute of it!

      Soooooo Sweet

      Comes highly recommended. I starting reading this to my little one at about 13 months. She loves the fact she gets so many kisses as a result of our bed time reading ritual..

      Great Book!!!!!

      I purchased this book to help my 2 year old learn how to count. WELL, not only has it helped her with her numbers, but it has helped her learn her body parts and where they are. Like 10 tiny toes... she new she had toes, but not 10 of them!! I read it to her only 4 times, and she remembered what body part was coming up before I said it!! How amazing is that. This is one of her new favorites, we will probably have to buy a second copy because she takes it everywhere we go.

      Loving and Cute!

      We checked this book out from the library. During the time we had the book we had to read it at least twice a day, every single day. My husband would read it while I kissed our daughter through the pages....then my turn to read and he would kiss her through the pages. She got a big thrill out of the attention and counting together. I have never recommended a book before, but this one is GREAT! It will be a Christmas gift for our daughter.....if I can wait till then.
