Cheerful, lighthearted illustrations accompany this collection of nursery rhymes that deal with numbers. Part of the "Mother Goose Rhymes" series, this title contains many familiar ditties but also quite a few of the less well-known verses. Although any rhymes that are appropriate for youngsters and encompass words about numbers seem to have been fair game for this compilation, many of the poems are actually quite "mathematical." Consider the rhyme "Pairs or Pears" (first we can examine the homonym): "Twelve pairs were high, / Twelve knights came riding by, / Each knight took a pear, / And left a dozen hanging there." This simple poem gives the opportunity to discuss multiplication, subtraction, and mathematical vocabulary (how may in a pair?)—twenty four minus twelve equals twelve (which is a dozen!). The font size is large and simple with adequate spacing to encourage early readers while appealing to a wide range of readers/listeners. Pierce capitalizes on the space by providing large, colorful, loosely-structured images that aptly support the poems with visual enticements that draw readers in. Visually appealing and tempting to the ear, this is a book to share again and again as youngsters will demand "more." This is a perfect way to introduce cadence, rhythm, and a basic understanding of lots of numerical information. Includes "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep," "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe," "One for the Money," "St. Ives," and 17 others. A history of "Nursery Rhymes and Mother Goose," a "Learn More" section listing books and websites, and an "Index of First Lines" are included in the backmatter. I recommend this for all libraries—both public and private. I am eager to share it withour two-year-old grandson—he already loves numbers and will enjoy the reinforcement provided in this delightful collection. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan
