Country Hits 2006

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
Country Hits 2006 -- subtitled "The Best of New Country" -- contains cuts from the albums that hitmakers and up-and-comers released in 2005. There aren't singles here, but that's just fine. The reason is simply that one of the things Nash Vegas does best in the era of new country is craft albums the way rock & roll producers did in the 1970s and '80s. These sets are crafted to go no less than four singles deep. And that's a plus for consumers. It's also interesting in an overview like this to see where the music has been, where it is now, and where it seems to be going. There are a few tunes here that signify going back to earlier eras, such as the blend of heavy rock ...

There are a few tunes here that signify going back to earlier eras, such as the blend of heavy rock & roll with truck driving country in "I'm a Road Hammer" by the Road Hammers and Paul Brandt's "Convoy." There are some fine cuts by veterans here, such as Terri Clark's "The World Needs a Drink" and "He Gets That from Me" by Reba McEntire, who made a comeback in 2005, and by the new hats on the block, like Gary Allan with his suggestive "Nothing on But the Radio." And, of course, would any country compilation be complete without a cut from Big & Rich? Their hilarious "Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy" is here, and their blend of hard rock, bluegrass and backwoods swampy country à la Tony Joe White, who they owe a great debt to is simply irresistible. Kid Rock's been trying to move in this direction for some time, but this pair has got the market covered with distorted fiddle and a metal guitar solo, an upfront banjo and acoustic guitars digging deep into a blues groove, and an imitation hip-hop backbeat. Lee Ann Womack also makes an appearance here with the beautiful ballad "I May Hate Myself in the Morning," and also featured are Joe Nichols' two-stepping "What's a Guy Gotta Do" and the sultry country-pop of "Red Headed Girl" by Alana Levandoski. This set is a little big on novelty numbers in its 20 selections, but it does accurately reflect pretty much everything going on in the industry at the moment.
