Faith Andrews Bedford, a favorite with Country Living's readers, captures the magic of summer, childhood, and home in a moving collection of essays.

For years, the readers of Country Living have adored Faith Andrews Bedford's evocative stories, featured in her beloved bi-monthly column, "Kids in the Country." This enchanting collection invites everyone to join Bedford as she movingly recaptures the modest triumphs of children, the importance of family traditions, and the simple pleasures of country life. In "Sister Dresses," Faith's mother finds three special Easter outfits "all exactly the same," delighting her daughters. "Time & a Bottle" tells of Faith's girlhood walks along the beach, where she hoped that the sea glass she collected "had come from a perfume bottle thrown into the water a century ago by an elegant lady in France." Every one of these essays explores the beauty in the ordinary and the meaning in the everyday.

Country Living Barefoot Summers: Reflections on Home, Family, and Simple Pleasures

Having grown up a missionary child in Africa I had always felt that my experiences would never be like that of girls who grew up in America. But when I found Mrs. Bedford's book it was clear that we are all sisters beneath the skin. I too had a dress-up box, looked for shard of frosted glass at the seahshore, embroidered initial in a family christening gown. The stories Faith writes are about a shared experience, a universal truth. Her essays bring peace and tranquility to a frenzied life. When we moved back to America, when I was 16 I thought I would lose the precious memories of tradition led family life. Through this slender volume I have rediscovered them. Thank you, Mrs. Bedford

Country Living Barefoot Summers: Reflections on Home, Family, and Simple Pleasures

What a great book. The wonderful, evocative essays are all about three pages long and have a quiet, gentle quality that make them terrific bedtime reading. Giving my teen age daughter the book when she could not go to sleep one night, I told her 'Take two before bed,' And sure enough she was lulled off to dreamland. Now we fight to see who can have the book on their bedside table. Faith really touches our hearts with her simple tales of childhood and wonder, parenting and its joys and the splendors of nature. But these stories are not just reminescences, they are modern fables for a weary world. If my daughter cannot give Barefoot Summers up again tonight, I may have to order another volume!

Country Living Barefoot Summers: Reflections on Home, Family, and Simple Pleasures

I used to give Country Living as Christmas presnets because of Faith Andrews Bedford's stories. Now I find that I can have many of them all together in one book. Her pieces are addictive. The more you read the more you want. I was so disappointed when the book was finished. Her turns of phrase are pure poetry and her dialogue sounds exactly like an 8-year-old child when a child is speaking. What my friends and I have discovered is that her stories may seem to be about ordinary things but that are actually about the special in the every day. This is a delightful book for summer reading or anytime else for that matter. A number of the stories touch on Christmas or Thanksgiving. But I think my favorite was 'Sounds of a Summer House.' Reading it you can actually hear the porch swing squeak and the rain drops pelting the chimney.

Country Living Barefoot Summers: Reflections on Home, Family, and Simple Pleasures

I've been a fan of Faith Andrews Bedford ever since I read one of her 'Kids in the Country' columns in Country Living magazine about ten years ago. I was so excited to learn that lots of her essays and stories have been pulled together in one book. Each of these wonderful pieces tugged at my heart and made me laugh or cry or both. But almost all of them carried me back to my own childhood or the early years of my own parenting to help me recall the wonder of children, the traditions of family, the closeness of grandparents and grandchildren. Although her stories might be about ordinary things like taking a walk with a toddler or looking for sea glass on the beach or making jam, the messages in these essays are extraordinary. I cannot recommend this highly. I am planning to give one of these reasonably priced books to each of my siblings, cousins and friends for Christmas. It makes a great hostess present too.
